What Is a High-Sided Litter Box?

There are different types of litter boxes out there on the market. Some are covered, some have low sides, some have high sides, and some are mechanical and clean themselves. As a cat owner, you may get overwhelmed with all the different features. For this article, we’ll take a deep dive into litter boxes with high sides. High-sided litter boxes are basically just that: a litter box with high sides.

“Cat litter boxes with higher sides and walls benefit both the owners and cats,” says Dr. Hunter Finn, DVM, general practice veterinarian and owner of Pet Method in McKinney, TX. “From the cat’s point of view, it can add a heightened sense of security in what can be a very unprotected moment in the wild. From our point of view, these walls can prevent litter from collecting on the floor and actually stay in the box, especially as cats may dig and kick after urination and defecation.”

When cats do their business, they naturally dig around to bury their waste. As they do so, they may inadvertently kick the litter out of the box. High-sided litter boxes have high sides to keep mess in the box—from tracking and dust to spraying.

For this reason, some companies have created covered litter boxes, too, but some cats don’t like covered litter boxes. They want to know they have a way to escape. A high-sided litter box still gives that comfort of escape potential while preventing mess.

In addition to high sides, high-sided litter boxes will also have an opening so cats can easily climb in and climb out. For this reason alone, you can expect that there is no such thing as a 360-degree high-side litter box. If there was, how would your cat get access? When I had kittens, I did use a low-sided litter box at first. Ward, who’s also internationally recognized as a leading pet advocate, adds, “Male cats that tend to spray might benefit from a box with high sides, which can reduce the need for cleanups outside of the box. Plus, higher walls can help minimize litter spills and scatters, helping you to keep a tidy home.” 

Ward also warns, “Cats can be fussy regarding litter box preferences. Some favor high sides, while others deem it a hassle. If you notice that your healthy kitty is having occasional accidents outside of the litter box, try a lower, larger box. Older cats with arthritis or mobility issues may also appreciate a litter box with easy entry. If you have a new kitty, you can offer a variety of sizes and shapes to see which one your kitty picks.   

Even though high-sided litter boxes are a good option, there are a couple of potential challenges to know about. For one, some cats can be very fickle. Some might want a low-sided litter box because they are afraid to feel trapped. You’ll have to test a high-sided litter box and hope your cat will prefer it over the low-sided. 

Another potential challenge is size. Most high-sided litter boxes are generally larger than the low-sided ones. If you have plenty of room, no problem. If you’re limited in space, you may not find a high-sided litter box that’s compact enough to fit.

Finn reminds, “Every single cat is different, and I really mean every single cat is different. You know your cat best, but if you’re not sure what they like, you’ll have to test. 

Size

Too small of a litter box won’t be a good thing. Spoiler alert: The bigger, the better. You’ll want a large litter box that can accommodate your cat, especially if you have a kitten who’s going to eventually grow. According to Ward, “When selecting a litter box, bigger is always better. Make sure that the litter box is big enough to allow your kitty to turn around without touching the sides.”

You have to factor in what’s in the box. “Don’t forget that litter is also a key element of litter box love. In general, clay, non-scented, clumping litter is the top pick for most cats,” he says.

Finn also points out the number of litter boxes you have in your household is also an important factor. “I always recommend cat owners have at least one litter box per cat, plus an additional one in their homes at all times.”

We have two cats in our house: a three-year-old male named Loki and a 10-month-old female named Bailey. On the other hand, Bailey grew up inside since she was six weeks old and is a social butterfly.

Both are used to Tidy Cats’ clay unscented litter and have become experts at using the Litter Robot in the last six months. When I decided to try the Naturally Fresh Harmony Scented Cat litter, I gradually added it to the Litter Robot over a week to get them used to it. By the end of the first week, the transition to Naturally Fresh litter was complete, and both cats were happy using it. 

We’ve always had an air purifier in the cat room, but the difference in the way the room smelled was immediate after switching to the Naturally Fresh Harmony Lavender & Bamboo. Things We Like

I am glad I got to test the Naturally Fresh Harmony Lavender & Bamboo litter because it was so easy to use, smells pleasant, and calms my cats. I no longer hold my breath when I approach the litter area. The litter doesn’t stick to the cats’ paws so it doesn’t track all over the house like the clay litter.

According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, one way to check for dehydration is to gently pull the skin on your cat’s shoulders upwards. “Because liners are flexible, urine can pool, and feces get caught in folds, making it difficult to scoop boxes,” says Marilyn Krieger, an internationally recognized Certified Cat Behavior Consultant and author.  

Check a liner’s dimensions to ensure it will fit your cat’s litter box properly. It should provide enough coverage without shifting around, regardless of the type of box you’re using (e.g., open, covered, top entry, tall-sided, etc.). 

Also, bear in mind that liners can tear. Kelsey says kitties might get hurt if their claws get stuck in a liner. Search for durable materials that are resistant to tears and tough against claws.

Cat litter box furniture can work well in various spaces, especially smaller homes where it might be harder to find a secluded area just for a litter box. “People who live in small spaces seem to like litter box furniture, as it allows them to place a box in a more appealing location to the cat but it doesn’t become an eyesore,” says Joey Lusvardi, owner of Class Act Cats and an IAABC certified cat behavior consultant. 

A hidden litter box may even prevent messes and keep things organized. “Litter box furniture can help contain the litter if your cat kicks up a small sandstorm whenever they’re done using the box. You still have to clean the inside of the cabinet, but it’s at least contained,” Lusvardi explains. “Many of them also have storage included so you can keep cleaning supplies, extra litter, or any number of box maintenance things nearby.”

“Some people may need to put their litter box in a piece of furniture to try and lower dust in the home if they have respiratory issues. Or they may have to weigh the option of either using furniture or not being able to have a litter box in a room that really needs one,” says LeeAnna Buis, CFTBS, a Certified Feline Training and Behavior Specialist at Feline Behavior Solutions.  

Furniture that hides litter boxes can also be useful if you have kids or other pets. “For homes with dogs or children who may see the box as a sandbox, litter box furniture can help keep them out. It gives the cats a more private space that they won’t be disturbed in,” Lusvardi notes.

Despite the appeal of litter box furniture, bear in mind that it won’t necessarily work for all cats.

First, it’s important that you keep the furniture clean and free of odors every day. Otherwise, your kitty might look for other places to eliminate. “Because litter box cabinets may contain the smell of the box, people can easily decide they don’t need to scoop the box every day. While the smell may not be apparent to us, when your cat goes to use the box, they’re certainly going to smell it,” Lusvardi warns. 

Some cats prefer boxes that are open on the top and sides so they can see what’s going on around them. According to Buis, “Cats are prey animals in the wild. And when they’re eliminating, they are very vulnerable to predators. Even though they live in our homes now, they still have the instinct to avoid risky situations. Eliminating in an area where they can’t see what’s going on around them is risky. They want open sightlines so there’s no chance of a predator (even just another cat or dog they don’t get along with) sneaking up on them.”  

“If you must use furniture, consider opening it up as much as you can. Open or remove doors so your cat has an easier way in and a better view of what’s happening around the box,” recommends Buis. “It can also help to position the furniture with one side in the corner against the wall so there’s less opportunity for another pet to sneak up around the side.”

The furniture should be large enough to hold a litter box that’s the appropriate size for your cat. You might need to go with a bigger piece, but it’ll be worth it if your kitty can use it comfortably. 

“Make sure it’s large enough that your cat can easily move around and stand up. It shouldn’t be a tiny enclosure. In fact, the litter box itself should be at least 1 ½ times the length of your cat’s body without their tail,” says Buis.

Your cat should be able to get into and out of the enclosure with ease. Otherwise, they might decide to do their business outside of the box.  

If you come across top-entry litter box furniture or products with stairs, consider if they’ll make it harder for your feline friend to get in and out. “For older cats or cats with mobility issues, even small barriers to getting in may be too much,” Lusvardi explains.

If you live in a multi-cat household or one with other pets, consider furniture that has multiple entryways. “The boxes could potentially become a place where one cat gets cornered in a cat fight,” Lusvardi warns. “It may also be possible that a dog could corner a cat in the furniture, which could become dangerous quickly.”

How can I train my cat to use litter box furniture?

Patience is required when training your cat or introducing them to something new like litter box furniture. “The key to success is not going too fast, or you may have a litter box aversion on your hands,” advises Lusvardi. He recommends placing the old litter box close to the new furniture for a few days. Once you see your cat using the new box for several days, you can remove the old one. 

What if your cat keeps using the old box and refuses to use the new one in the furniture? “You may want to try moving it to a different location or changing something about the furniture. For example, if there’s a door flap, you may want to remove it, or if there’s a way you can open up an extra entrance, open that up,” recommends Lusvardi.  “Consider adding a ramp to make it easier for your cat to get in, especially if they’re older.” He adds that you can even place some of your cat’s used litter into the new box to attract them to it.  

Lusvardi also says it’s best to leave it up to your cat to figure out. You shouldn’t force your pet into the furniture, as this could stress them out and make them develop an aversion to it. Never punish your kitty for choosing not to use the furniture.  

How can I make my own DIY litter box enclosure?

If you’d like to take a DIY approach, you can create an enclosure that may not be as stylish as the ones on our list, but it will be effective and cat-friendly. Lusvardi says you can use a plastic tub with high sides and a lid. 

“With a sharp blade or power cutter, start at the top and cut an entrance into one of the walls, ending about 1 to 2 inches from the bottom. I usually don’t recommend cutting out a circle, as many cats may not like having their fur rub up against the entrance,” says Lusvardi.

He recommends sanding the edges or applying duct tape so the opening is smooth and safe. Then simply place a litter box inside the plastic tub to create a roomy, easy-to-use enclosure for your cat.

When it comes to the lid, he says, “If your cat really flings litter but prefers an open box, you can cut the lid in half to partially cover it while still maintaining an opening. Otherwise, the lid can be used as a tray to catch any litter that is being tracked.”

From the start, we were a little apprehensive about testing this formula, since my husband is highly sensitive to perfumes and dyes. As such, we typically avoid scented litter. But I know that scents and strengths vary, and it’s often hard to tell from the description whether the aroma will be overwhelming or subtle. So we figured we’d give it a shot.

Again, our cats had no issues getting used to the scented option. We were expecting the litter to be heavily perfumed, since Glade is well-known for its home air fresheners and fragrances. According to Tidy Cats, its Lightweight 4-in-1 Strength formula targets the biggest culprits when it comes to litterbox odors — feces, bacteria, urine, and ammonia.

Well, we didn’t smell those particular odors, so the product definitely delivers what it promises. However, within an hour of mixing this litter into our unscented litter, its scent became too much for us to tolerate.

What’s advertised as a “complex floral scent” smelled more like fruity bubblegum to our noses. Again, we are particularly sensitive to smells, so maybe this wouldn’t bother someone more accustomed to scented litters or in households where the litter box is kept out of the way or in a separate room.

Flushing any cat litter down the toilet, clumping or non-clumping, can potentially introduce this parasite into the community water supply and infect other people, as well as marine life.

Do cats prefer clumping or non-clumping cat litter?

According to Geller, though many studies have been done, there’s no clear cut answer to this one. “My philosophy is to use what your cat likes. In almost every study, the conclusion usually states what most cats like. But, this means there is a minority of cats that likes something else – and you may have one of those cats in the minority.”In order to get a better idea of what your cat may prefer, Geller says you can put a few options to the test. “Have two boxes, side by side, one with clumping litter and one with non-clumping litter. Scoop both boxes daily at the same time. You want the only difference to be the litter, so the location, size of the box, covered vs uncovered, frequency and time of cleaning should all be identical. Note which box gets used the most and you will have your answer as to what your cat prefers.”
