Life stage. Healthy cat food will be nutritionally complete and balanced for your pet’s age. AAFCO’s life stages for cats are: gestation/lactation, growth, maintenance, and all life stages. Measure the space you need to cover to keep your pet out of the area, keeping in mind that there shouldn’t be large gaps between the gate and the walls and floor – you don’t want your kitty to slip through or get stuck.

Good Fit and Tear-Resistant

A good fit and tear-resistant, unscented materials are a must for liners.

Remember, stinky messes can happen even when using a liner; sometimes, they could be worse than not having a liner in place.

“Because liners are flexible, urine can pool, and feces get caught in folds, making it difficult to scoop boxes,” says Marilyn Krieger, an internationally recognized Certified Cat Behavior Consultant and author.  

Check a liner’s dimensions to ensure it will fit your cat’s litter box properly. It should provide enough coverage without shifting around, regardless of the type of box you’re using (e.g., open, covered, top entry, tall-sided, etc.). 

Also, bear in mind that liners can tear. Kelsey says kitties might get hurt if their claws get stuck in a liner. Search for durable materials that are resistant to tears and tough against claws. 

“Cats often get their claws caught in the plastic, creating holes and sometimes shredding the liners. Excrement can then become trapped under the liners. Instead of becoming a solution, liners can create more problems for cat parents, and cats can develop a negative association with their litter boxes and avoid using them,” adds Krieger.   

As mentioned above, fragrances can cause cats to avoid the litter box, too. If you’re set on using a liner, Kelsey advises looking for those that don’t have any added fragrance.

Silvervine isn’t toxic to cats. “Silvervine has no negative effects. It is neither addictive nor harmful if ingested. There may be hazards with the toys themselves, but the Silvervine itself is non-toxic,” says DeVoss. “It’s not a food topper, but ingesting a little if they lick it is fine,” states Van de Kieft. 

Silvervine is potent. If you purchase it in powder form or coarsely ground, you don’t need to use much of it. “You only need a pinch of good quality Silvervine, which you can rub on a toy, scratcher, or towel,” says Van de Kieft. 

Silvervine vs. Catnip: What’s the Difference?

Silvervine and catnip are plants that have compounds that attract cats. They’re natural and considered safe for kitties. 

All cat behaviorists we spoke with said Silvervine is more potent than catnip. Because it contains compounds different from those in catnip, felines who aren’t affected by catnip toys might love getting their paws on Silvervine toys instead.

Freshness and potency

“Both catnip and Silvervine lose their potency over time,” says DeVoss. So, the fresher the Silvervine in a toy, the more potent it will be. Some manufacturers can provide information on how fresh their Silvervine is.   

You can also purchase Silvervine on its own to ensure potency. “I don’t like to buy products with catnip or Silvervine already in them. I like to add it myself. I buy catnip and Silvervine in herb or powder form that I can add to toys, scratchers, or towels,” says Van de Kieft.  

Purity

The more transparent a manufacturer is about the source of their Silvervine and its quality, the better. “It is challenging to ensure a high-quality source of Silvervine because it is more difficult to grow than catnip. You’ll want to be sure the Silvervine is 100 percent natural with no additives,” says DeVoss. 

Linda Hall and Rita Reimers, feline behaviorists/trainers certified through the Animal Behavior College, advise searching for Silvervine that won’t expose your pet to fertilizers or pesticides and beware of sellers making false claims. “Always look for organic Silvervine. We have also found some people selling catnip sticks, such as Silvervine. These will have minimal appeal to most cats. Make sure you are getting actual Silvervine.”

Design

DeVoss says you can give your cat Silvervine sticks for chewing and buy whole Silvervine gall fruit for felines. She adds that you can find toys filled with ground Silvervine or get Silvervine powder to sprinkle on scratchers and bedding. 

No matter which type you choose, “it’s important to find a quality Silvervine grower, or the product might not be as potent,” advises DeVoss.

“I recommend soft toys that are filled with a Silvervine and catnip mix and use no other artificial fillers. This assures you’re getting the maximum euphoric effect for your cat,” says DeVoss.

Hall and Reimers recommend carefully checking materials when shopping for Silvervine products. “Cats will be rough with those toys, licking, chewing, etc. So, as with any toy, ensure no loose parts can be pulled or chewed off. Restraints like a wrapped towel [or] Elizabethan collar or cone, or having a second person, are good options for home nail trims. Start with the least restrictive position so as not to over-handle or cause undue stress to the cat.”

The furniture should be large enough to hold a litter box that’s the appropriate size for your cat. You might need to go with a bigger piece, but it’ll be worth it if your kitty can use it comfortably. 

“Make sure it’s large enough that your cat can easily move around and stand up. It shouldn’t be a tiny enclosure. In fact, the litter box itself should be at least 1 ½ times the length of your cat’s body without their tail,” says Buis.

Your cat should be able to get into and out of the enclosure with ease. Otherwise, they might decide to do their business outside of the box.

If you live in a multi-cat household or one with other pets, consider furniture that has multiple entryways. “The boxes could potentially become a place where one cat gets cornered in a cat fight,” Lusvardi warns. “It may also be possible that a dog could corner a cat in the furniture, which could become dangerous quickly.”   

Visibility and airflow

The right design can help your cat feel safe while using the litter box, as well as help ensure odors won’t get trapped inside and make it uninviting. “The more open the better, which I know defeats the purpose to a degree, but it’s important,” says Buis.

Lusvardi says, “Some cats like a lot of privacy and may prefer a hiding spot that the litter box furniture contains. Others may prefer an open box.”

How can I train my cat to use litter box furniture?

Patience is required when training your cat or introducing them to something new like litter box furniture. “The key to success is not going too fast, or you may have a litter box aversion on your hands,” advises Lusvardi. He recommends placing the old litter box close to the new furniture for a few days. Once you see your cat using the new box for several days, you can remove the old one. 

What if your cat keeps using the old box and refuses to use the new one in the furniture? “You may want to try moving it to a different location or changing something about the furniture. For example, if there’s a door flap, you may want to remove it, or if there’s a way you can open up an extra entrance, open that up,” recommends Lusvardi.  “Consider adding a ramp to make it easier for your cat to get in, especially if they’re older.” He adds that you can even place some of your cat’s used litter into the new box to attract them to it.  

Lusvardi also says it’s best to leave it up to your cat to figure out. You shouldn’t force your pet into the furniture, as this could stress them out and make them develop an aversion to it. Never punish your kitty for choosing not to use the furniture.  

How can I make my own DIY litter box enclosure?

If you’d like to take a DIY approach, you can create an enclosure that may not be as stylish as the ones on our list, but it will be effective and cat-friendly. Lusvardi says you can use a plastic tub with high sides and a lid. 

“With a sharp blade or power cutter, start at the top and cut an entrance into one of the walls, ending about 1 to 2 inches from the bottom. I usually don’t recommend cutting out a circle, as many cats may not like having their fur rub up against the entrance,” says Lusvardi.

He recommends sanding the edges or applying duct tape so the opening is smooth and safe. Then simply place a litter box inside the plastic tub to create a roomy, easy-to-use enclosure for your cat.

When it comes to the lid, he says, “If your cat really flings litter but prefers an open box, you can cut the lid in half to partially cover it while still maintaining an opening. Otherwise, the lid can be used as a tray to catch any litter that is being tracked.”

Do cats like top entry litter boxes?

There are many types of litter boxes because different cats will have varying preferences. Some might favor open boxes they can access from all sides, while others might want the privacy of a covered cat litter box with an entrance at the top. 

“Some cats feel vulnerable in their litter boxes and they want a clear visual field when they are in the box, which a top entry box does not provide. If you have a bustling household with children and other cats/pets, then your cat may feel less secure in a top entry box and would prefer an open box,” says Geller. 

It may take some time to figure out what your cat wants. For example, you might try setting up multiple types of boxes to see which one your pet uses the most. 

Are top opening litter boxes bad for some cats?

There are some instances in which a top entry box wouldn’t be the right choice. Think about your pet’s physical condition, age, and weight. “A top entry litter box may not work for cats who are older, arthritic, or overweight,” warns Geller. “Kittens may find a top entry box to be difficult to jump up to.”

How should I transition my cat to a top entrance litter box?

The key is to transition slowly to help ensure your cat will use the box and there won’t be any accidents. “In general, you never want to go from zero to 60 with cats. Change needs to occur gradually and incrementally,” says Geller. 

If your cat has never used a top entry box, you might try putting her on the lid to let her see the way in. Don’t force your cat into the box; instead, let her get accustomed to jumping onto it to access the opening. Just be patient, as this could be a big change for your pet, and it may take time for her to adjust.   

How can I train my cat to use a top entry litter box? 

When training your cat to use a new litter box, Geller recommends placing it near the old one. “Keep the old box where it is for your cat’s feeling of safety and security, and place the new top entry box in the same location. Keep using the same litter and use the same location for both boxes.”   

Next, use scent to draw your kitty to the new box. “I recommend putting a small bit of your cat’s soiled litter from the old box into the new top entry box so that your cat recognizes her scents. In addition, take a sock and gently rub your cat’s face and chin on it, and then use the sock to rub the outside of the new top entry box. This will help her feel like she has already marked this new box as hers,” says Geller.  

Finally, don’t rush to get rid of the old box. “Slowly move the old box away from the location, just a few inches a day,” Geller advises. “Once your cat is consistently using the top entry box, you can remove the old one.”

According to Dr. Nathalie Paiva, part of the emergency and critical care team at NorthStar VETS in New Jersey, “Chewing is a natural behavior for dogs. It serves many purposes, including checking out their environment, keeping their teeth clean, and enrichment (preventing boredom). Sometimes, dogs chew to help relieve pain or anxiety.”

A dog’s breed might also play a role. “I find that all high-energy breeds whose basic needs are not being met are more likely to need to chew, “ says Jeff Coltenback, a dog trainer and rescuer in North Carolina. “And working dogs [like Border Collies] that are stuck in a [standard] domestic environment without access to actual work will also be likely to need to chew. Of course, dogs are individuals and chewing may arise regardless of breed.”

Types of Dog Chews

Just be sure to supervise your pet so he doesn’t end up biting off too much, which might be a choking hazard.

• Dental chews for dogs. Dental chews may be softer and more flexible, so these could be a good option if other chews are too hard for your dog. They come in many shapes and sizes, and they’re designed to help clean your pet’s teeth.

• Horn and antler dog chews. Natural horn and antler dog chews are hard and available in a myriad shapes and sizes. Keep in mind that supervising your dog is necessary as these might splinter, which can result in your dog cutting his gums or breaking his teeth. 

• Himalayan dog chews. Also known as yak chews, Himalayan chews are a natural option made with yak’s milk. Other ingredients may include cow’s milk, lime, and salt. What About Rawhide Dog Chews and Himalayan Dog Chews?

While rawhide dog chews and himalayan dog chews are popular pet products, they generally aren’t recommended by veterinarians. 

“As an emergency veterinarian, I have seen rawhide chews stuck everywhere from the roof of the mouth to the esophagus and the intestines,” says Dr. Paiva. “Many dogs have needed surgery to remove rawhide pieces from their stomach or intestines. Some dogs have died from choking on a piece of rawhide.”

Himalayan chews or yak chews are very hard and can damage a dog’s teeth. They are also prone to splintering, which can cause serious gastrointestinal obstructions. Himalayan dog chews are also made with cow’s milk, and most dogs are lactose intolerant and do not need dairy in their diets. For these reasons, most experts do not recommend these types of dog chews.

If you do want to give your dog rawhide or himalayan dog chews, discuss them with your veterinarian before giving them to your dog. Ask about precautions you can take and whether the chews are a good option for your pet.

Coltenback agrees, saying they can help satisfy your dog’s prey drive and alleviate boredom. “I think providing chews is essential for most dogs, whether they are adequately stimulated or not,” he says. “Chews do provide enrichment.”

Paiva also mentions that they can be helpful in keeping a chew-happy pup’s teeth away from your stuff, ensuring the safety of both your dog and your belongings. “Providing dogs with appropriate chews helps to prevent them from using your personal items as chews,” she explains. “Chewing on inappropriate items can be dangerous for your dog.” 

Things to Consider When Buying Dog Chews

There are a few things you want to look out for when purchasing dog chews.

Check the label. Read labels carefully, and choose products that contain safe ingredients and are a suitable size for your dog. Purchasing dog chews made by trustworthy manufacturers can give you peace of mind. Or, you can narrow your options by looking for vet-recommended dog chews.  

“Some dogs do not tolerate certain types of chews. If your dog has food allergies, you must be very careful when picking chews to make sure they are not allergic to the ingredients,” says Dr. Paiva. If your dog starts having vomiting, excessive gas and/or diarrhea, or is extra itchy immediately after or within a few days of trying a new chew, seek veterinary attention and avoid that chew in the future.

Ask questions. If you think your pet might benefit from chews with added ingredients, such as probiotic chews for dogs or CBD chews for dogs, it’s wise to consult with a veterinarian, as you want to be sure they’re safe for your canine companion.

Beware of breakability. “The most important thing I recommend looking for in a chew is that it cannot be easily broken into large pieces,” says Paiva. “Large pieces can get stuck in the mouth or gastrointestinal tract. It also should not be very hard since tooth fractures can occur from chewing.”

Vet recommended. Read labels, talk to your veterinarian, and try to purchase dog chewing treats that are the right size, ingredients, and are veterinarian recommended.

Dog Chew Safety Tips

As you know by now, there are some risks that come with chews for dogs. “Dog chews can get stuck in between teeth, break teeth, become stuck in the stomach and intestines requiring surgery, and can be a choking hazard,” explains Dr. Paiva.

It’s also necessary to keep an eye on your dog while he’s enjoying his chew, and to know when it’s time to replace it with a new one. “Dogs should be supervised when chewing. If their chews get small enough to be swallowed, they should be taken away,” she adds. “If you notice your dog can break off large pieces or you notice blood on the chew or in their mouth, it should be taken away.”

Coltenback shares this tip: “Offering a chew while you hold it is a good way to introduce a new chew to make sure the dog is actually gnawing (using the rear teeth) instead of trying to just swallow the chew whole.”
