However, it’s also worth noting that a cat food with “fresh” on the label won’t necessarily meet the above criteria. “The United States Food and Drug Administration does not specifically restrict foods from being labeled as ‘fresh,’ so there are no set standards,” Swiniarski explains.

The best fresh food for cats is the one that your cat enjoys and is best for her. Cats tend to be creatures of habit, so you’ll transition her slowly and ensure she is introduced to the taste, aroma, and texture of fresh cat food in a proper way. You may need to adjust the transition process according to your cat’s reaction and digestive reaction.

If you’re feeding fresh, raw cat food, find out what type of pathogen control methods the company uses and how those methods affect the nutritional benefits of the food.

Quality of ingredients: Look for recipes that feature whole food ingredients and that are free of preservatives, fillers, artificial colors and flavors, and “mystery meats.” You may notice the term “human-grade” on some fresh pet foods, which means it is made from ingredients that are fit for human consumption. Top Kitten Food vs. Cat Food: What’s the Difference?

Some pet parents may wonder: Why not just choose a good cat food for kittens? But kittens have different nutritional needs than adult cats. So it’s important to feed kittens food that is specifically formulated for them.

“Both kittens and cats are obligate carnivores, so they require a certain amount of protein and amino acids in their diet to be healthy,” Dr. Emily Swiniarski, chief medical officer of PAWS Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, explains. “Where they differ is that kittens need more fat and protein in their diets than adult cats. This is because kittens grow very rapidly and need to support that growth.” 

A kitten’s metabolism starts to slow around 8 or 9 months, and that’s when Swiniarski recommends transitioning your cat to adult food. “Don’t just swap out the food suddenly, though,” she cautions. “That can cause your cat to become ill.” She recommends introducing the adult cat food mixed in with the kitten food and eventually phasing the kitten food out. 

Good Kitten Food: What to Look For

So, how can you tell which cat food for kittens is best? Any food you feed your kitten should, at the very least, meet the requirements of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). “That’s the bare minimum,” Swiniarski says. Pet parents can see if their pet food has the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement on the label.

It’s also critical that kitten food be “cooked.” Not in the traditional sense, on the stovetop or in your oven, but you should avoid feeding a kitten raw food, Swiniarski says. “Raw food is more likely to carry harmful bacteria like salmonella, and kittens are particularly susceptible to food-borne illness,” she explains. 

You’ll also have a choice between grain-free and grain-inclusive kitten foods. In addition, you’ll notice that some recipes feature deboned meats whereas others may include bone meal and organ meats. Swiniarski says there is no reason to avoid a kitten food that contains grain or bone meal if your kitten likes it. “There are a lot of myths about the harm foods with these ingredients can cause pets, but most of them are false,” she says.

Pet parents who need some help finding a healthy kitten brand should ask their veterinarian how to choose the most healthy kitten food formula. “They’ll help you make the right decision for you and your cat,” she says.

How Much to Feed a Kitten

To ensure kittens get the nutritional support they need, Swiniarski recommends giving them access to both wet food and dry food, and not limiting their food intake until they are grown. “Kittens need to have an unlimited supply of food at all times,” she says. “You can offer canned food twice or even three times a day and then have dry food available for when they’re hungry in between meals. They should be allowed to eat whenever and however much they want.” She adds, “As I mentioned before, kittens are rapidly growing. When they’re hungry, it’s because there is a nutritional need.”

Swiniarski also notes that pet parents should look for a cat food that offers a variety of flavors and textures within the same brand. “You want your kitten to grow into an adult cat who isn’t picky, and the best way to do that is to give them a variety when they are young.”

Recently, my cats and I had the chance to put the Feeder-Robot to the test. I don’t know who was more excited about that…me or my cats. Here’s what we learned .

Putting the Feeder-Robot to the Test

That all sounds great, doesn’t it? But here’s the true test: I tried out the Feeder-Robot in the real world, introducing it to my crew of hungry, food-motivated felines. Here’s what the kitties and I thought about the Feeder-Robot test run.

I had tried out the Litter-Robot before, so I was familiar with Whisker brand products. However, I found the Litter-Robot a bit trickier to set up than the Litter-Robot. There was some assembly required and I had a little trouble with the instructions. After some trial-and-error, though, I got it up and running.

Though my cats had been slow to warm up to the Litter-Robot, they took to the Feeder-Robot immediately. However, our cats have been eating from an automatic pet feeder for a while, so that probably helped a lot.

For pets who may be hesitant to try new things, Whisker recommends giving them a day or two to get used to the Feeder-Robot before it’s even turned on. You might want to add a small handful of food or a few treats to the bowl to entice your pet.

Once they warm up to that, you can try filling the unit and pressing the feed button to get them used to the noise.

Though both my cats and I were accustomed to automatic feeders, it’s safe to say that the Feeder-Robot is an improvement over the previous feeder in almost every way.

For one thing, it’s much quieter—we don’t even notice when it dispenses. It’s also impossible for our kitty to get food out of the feeder when it’s not dispensing (she had figured out a way to knock food out of our previous feeder). I really like the transparent hopper, which allows me to see how much kibble is left and whether I need to buy more.

Then there’s the app. It’s easy to use, which makes the feeder easy to program. I can also check and make sure food was dispensed if the cats are being dramatic and acting as though they’ve never eaten before in their lives.

When I tell other pet parents about the Litter-Robot, I admit that it may not be for every cat. However, my experience with the Feeder-Robot was so positive, I recommend it to just about everyone I meet with no reservations.

Though some might balk at the price tag, it my opinion the device is worth every penny. It’s quiet, efficient, and helps you keep track of how much your pet is eating. I also love the app functionality and reporting. But what I love most of all is the peace of mind I get knowing that my pets are fed regularly and in the right amount, without me having to lift a finger.

The Feeder-Robot does offer several add-on accessories for an extra charge, including a glass bowl for $30, a stainless steel bowl for $20, and special Feeder-Robot Cleaner Wipes for $15. I didn’t opt for these extras, so I can’t really say if they’re worth the splurge.

But I did find the basic unit very easy to clean, as is. You can wash the removable parts by hand, which Whisker suggests doing at least once a month.

Overall, our Feeder-Robot test was a huge success–for both me and my cats. While this advanced model costs more than other automatic feeders, it’s really not a fair comparison because it’s a much better product than the other automatic feeders I’ve tried in the past. Well worth the investment!

How Does Litter-Robot Work?

So how does the Litter-Robot help you avoid the dreaded chore of scooping poop every day? It’s actually pretty cool. First, you fill the Robot with clumping cat litter. It has to be clumping litter, and here’s why: The entire inside of the device rotates, sending its contents into a separate compartment. As the device continues to rotate, that compartment becomes separated from the main chamber of the litter box by what could best be described as a screen. Any solids, whether they be poop or clumps of urine, are trapped, while the loose, clean litter slides back out through the screen. The waste is dropped into a drawer under the main chamber and only clean litter remains—absolutely zero scooping involved.

The Litter-Robot goes through this cleaning “cycle” every time it’s used. Sensors can tell when a cat leaves the box, and then it automatically will start the cycle. You can also start a cycle manually by pressing a button on the device.

So what’s the difference between the Litter-Robot 3 Connect vs Litter-Robot 4? Putting the Litter-Robot to the Test

Out of the box, the Litter-Robot was extremely easy to set up. Literally, all I had to do was remove the packaging, add some litter, and plug it in. But then the challenging part began. Despite the use of treats, litter attractant, catnip, and even soiled litter from their previous litter box, two of our cats were not interested in using the Litter-Robot. I do not blame the Litter-Robot for this. One of our cats is a big girl, about 14 pounds. We think the Litter-Robot was a bit too small for her, as she prefers a roomy litter box. The other kitty is very particular and does not handle change well, even for a cat.

After a week of zero interest in the Litter-Robot, we decided to bring in a ringer—we have a third cat who lives separately from the other two. She took to the Litter-Robot after a few days and so far, everything is going very well. The automatic function is quiet; you really can’t hear it unless you’re in the same room. There hasn’t been a need to clean it beyond emptying the drawer, which took approximately six days to fill. The immediate storage of waste keeps things smelling pretty fresh overall, but I will note that changing out the liner in the drawer is a pretty unpleasant task.

Is the Litter-Robot Worth It? Our Verdict

I would say that overall, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect is worth the investment. It won’t eliminate the need to clean your litter box entirely, but it significantly decreases the amount of time you spend directly dealing with your cat’s poop, which is a win. 

While I haven’t had a chance to test-drive the Litter-Robot 4 yet, I’m very eager to check it out. Even though the price is a bit higher, the added functionality is designed to make this model even more hands-off. This model uses advanced laser and weight sensor technology to analyze four safety zones within the unit, to make absolutely sure your cat is always safe. Plus, those sensors provide real-time litter and waste levels, so you always know when it’s time to change the litter or empty the waste drawer.

Other new features include a WhisperQuiet cleaning cycle, an enlarged waste drawer, a wider opening for cats to climb into, and an optional system to neutralize litter box odors. That’s a lot more bang for your buck. And, considering just how much most pet parents dread litter box chores, that’s worth a lot.

Whether you choose the Litter-Robot 3 Connect or the Litter-Robot 4, the most critical factor to consider is your cat’s personality. What Should Senior Cats Eat?

Senior cats’ nutritional needs are closely tied to their overall health. “Senior cats become less active and tend to have reduced lean body mass, which ultimately results in a lower basal metabolic rate,” Miller explains. “Additionally, senior cats are more prone to the development of diseases that alter nutritional requirements.” This means that a cat with chronic kidney disease will have different nutritional needs than a cat with gastrointestinal issues.

If you ask your veterinarian what is the best cat food for older cats, they are likely to recommend one or more based on your cat’s individual needs, preferences, and health concerns.

While there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution for old cat food nutrition, Miller notes that the most important food consideration for a senior cat is managing a consistent weight, which can impact longevity, and keeping your cat hydrated. “Aging can impair thirst drive. I typically recommend either transitioning to a moist diet or adding low salt broth, meat juices (i.e. tuna), or ‘pet drinks,’” he says.

Senior Cat Foods vs. Regular Cat Foods: What’s the Difference?

A recent study showed that senior cat foods generally differ from regular cat food in one major way: food marketed as “senior” cat food has significantly more fiber than “regular” cat food. Further, the study found no major difference in the crude protein, fat, and mineral concentrations between foods (1).

That doesn’t mean that all senior cat foods are the same – the amount of protein, fat, and fiber can vary greatly from brand to brand. Miller recommends that senior cats get a moderate protein diet, that is, food that is 30 to 45 percent crude protein. He also says that senior cats should get more calorically dense food. He again notes that a food that works for one cat may not work for another.“Every cat is an individual and there is no one diet that fits all cats. But, regardless of the formulation of the diet, I typically recommend higher protein, lower carbohydrate foods, and these can be in both wet and dry formulations.”

Most commercially available cat foods will meet your pet’s nutritional needs. Miller explains, “Commercial cat foods meet certain base-level criteria for nutrition. I recommend foods manufactured by companies with long-established histories of making quality food, that consult with veterinary nutritionists, and have stringent quality control measures.”

While counting calories isn’t the most fun activity, Miller adds that cats should be consuming about 200 calories per day. “I recommend quantifying how many calories your cat is eating on a per-day basis so you can quickly recognize a decrease in appetite,” he says.

Further, if your senior cat is experiencing age-related health issues, you should talk to your veterinarian about which diet would be most beneficial.  

Senior Cat Food: Tips and Advice

As you consider which older cat food food would work best for your senior kitty, perhaps the most important factor is whether the food helps your cat maintain a consistent, healthy weight. “It is vital that senior cats stay at a healthy weight,” Miller says. “At checkups, your family veterinarian will check your cat’s weight, muscle tone, and body condition to make sure they’re not too lean or too overweight. To maintain good health, senior cats should eat enough appropriate food to maintain their weight. If you notice a change in your senior cat’s weight—either an increase or decrease—or if they stop eating and using the litter box, see your veterinarian as soon as possible.”

Dr. Veronica Jones, a veterinarian on the emergency and critical care team at NorthStar VETS Emergency, Trauma, and Specialty practice in New Jersey, says that most unopened pet food has a shelf life of at least a year. 

However, pet parents should be diligent in ensuring their pet food isn’t served past its expiration date. “Always look at the expiration date before you purchase [pet food],” she says, “and check what’s on your shelf or pantry at home periodically.”

Jones notes that opened canned food should be stored in the fridge and used within a week. Dry food, once opened, lasts a little more than a month when stored properly.

Temperature is also important. 

“To keep food from spoiling, store it in your home where it will be kept at a normal indoor temperature (below 80 degrees),” Jones adds. “Exposure to extreme heat or humidity can sap food of its nutrients and shorten its shelf life.”

What to Look For in a Dog Food Container

A moisture barrier. “The best containers for bagged dog food will keep it visible and dry,” Jones says. 

Moisture is the enemy of dry dog food. “If you store dry food in an area where it can absorb moisture (like a garage or shed), it can grow mold and other toxins,” Jones explains. 

A tight lid. You’re not only keeping moisture and pests out of your dog’s food, you’re also trying to keep your dog from snacking. So a lid that closes tightly is essential. “It’s important to remember that dogs sometimes love their food so much that they will seek it out,” says Jones. “If the food is easily accessible, they may overindulge and [develop] food bloat. This is why dog food should be stored in a container and in a space that will prevent your dog from getting into it.”

Easy to clean. And finally, you want a container that can be cleaned. “If you use a container to store your food, make sure you clean and dry it between refills,” says Jones. “Dry food stored with moisture can grow mold, and old food residue can contaminate new food.”
