Over the past few years, there’s been a significant shift in consumer preferences toward “natural” products, from food to clothing to beauty. Even the world of pet supplies has seen increased demand for natural alternatives to essential items like cat litter. According to a recent study, demand for natural cat litter has been rising and will continue to increase for the foreseeable future.(1)

Further, the value of the natural cat litter market is expected to reach $11.3 million by 2030, up from $7.5 million in 2021.(1)

If you’d like to use natural cat litter but aren’t sure where to start, keep reading. We’ll give you the inside scoop with everything you need to know.

What is Natural Cat Litter?

The definition of “natural” can vary depending on who you talk to, but generally, a natural product is made from renewable or environmentally friendly materials and is free of harmful chemicals and additives.

Natural cat litter can be made from walnuts, corn, wheat, wood shavings or pellets, and even recycled paper products. Many natural cat litters are biodegradable or compostable, making them more eco-friendly than traditional clay cat litters.

They also typically create less dust, making them easier on kitties with asthma or other sensitivities.

However, there are some things to consider if you’re thinking of switching to a natural, more earth-friendly cat litter.

Natural litter can be pricier than standard clay litter. And, just like traditional cat litters, you’ll find a wide range of odor control and clumping capabilities. This often depends on the natural materials used, so it pays to do your research before you make a switch.

To get you started, here’s a helpful list of our favorite natural cat litter options, so you can make the best choice for your household and your favorite feline.

Natural Cat Litter: Buyer’s Guide

Now that you have a better idea about natural cat litter and its different forms, let’s break down some key factors to remember when choosing which one will work best for your feline friend and your family.

Price. Most natural cat litter is pricier than traditional clay litter. Sustainable processes often cost more than less-eco-friendly alternatives because they must meet more stringent standards. In this case, pet parents are paying for their cat litter to have a smaller environmental impact.

Biodegradability. If a litter is labeled “biodegradable,” that means that natural processes can break it down. This is another sustainable quality that may influence the litter’s price.

Shape/Form/Weight. Natural cat litters come in various shapes, sizes, and weights. Your choice will almost certainly come down to your cat’s preference. Some cats are fussy about the feel of pellets or wood shavings on their feet. Others couldn’t care less about pellets but can’t stand the feel of wheat. Unfortunately, you won’t know if your cat will tolerate a specific litter until you try it.

Special needs. Some cats have special needs that might prevent them from using a particular litter. For example, declawed cats don’t usually adjust well to pellet litter because it can hurt their feet. Or a cat may be allergic to wheat or corn. Be sure to consider your individual cat’s needs before diving into a new type of litter.

Flushable. Some litters are touted as flushable, but plumbers do not recommend flushing anything other than human waste and toilet paper. There are a couple of reasons for this.

First, most wastewater treatment plants are designed to manage human waste only, and cat feces carry some very dangerous bacteria and parasites that can spread into waterways. Second, most toilets manufactured after 1992 are considered low-flow and may not have the power needed to flush cat feces through a home’s pipes. This can lead to very serious and expensive clogs.(2)

Tips for Using Natural Cat Litter

  • Natural cat litter should be used much like traditional clay litter. Pet parents should pour about three inches of litter into their cat’s box and scoop at least once daily.
  • Most of the litters listed above are rated for households with multiple cats, but that doesn’t mean that you only need one box for several kitties. Veterinarians generally recommend one box per cat in the household plus one spare (so if you have three cats, you should have four boxes).
  • Lightweight litters are not typically recommended for automatic litter boxes. If you have an automatic box, ensure it will work with your preferred natural litter before taking the plunge.
  • If you’re transitioning your cat to a new litter, do not simply switch out the litter. Layer the new litter with the old so your kitty isn’t shocked by a different texture or scent.
  • Above all else, the best litter is the litter your cat will use. If your cat refuses to use a certain type of litter, it’s probably worth exploring other options rather than forcing the issue.

If you’re looking to make your home a little more eco-friendly, natural cat litter is a good place to start. With so many options out there, you’re sure to find one that fits Fluffy’s needs, now that you know what to look for!

One of the key responsibilities of pet parents is ensuring that their fuzzy friends have good food to eat. While kibble and canned food have been the main players in the cat food arena for quite some time, a new segment of the industry has been gaining speed over the past few years: fresh cat food.

Many cat owners have come to swear by the fresh food options that are now readily available in grocery stores, pet stores, or via online subscription. These foods boast easy digestibility, enticing flavors, and health benefits not found in traditional cat food. But how true are these claims? And what exactly differentiates fresh cat food from the canned stuff?

For pet parents who prefer a non-processed cat food, most fresh cat food options are made this way or are very minimally processed. Refrigerated cat food is made to maintain and preserve its freshness and nutritional value. Here are our top six picks followed by answers to commonly asked questions about fresh cat food.

What is Fresh Cat Food?

Cat sitting eating food from bowl

Let’s start with the basics. According to Dr. Emily Swiniarski, veterinarian and chief medical officer of PAWS Chicago, fresh cat foods “tend to use products that are less processed [than traditional cat foods], such as raw meat instead of meat meal.” These foods also typically use fewer preservatives and must be refrigerated or frozen to prevent bacterial growth and maintain freshness.

However, it’s also worth noting that a cat food with “fresh” on the label won’t necessarily meet the above criteria. “The United States Food and Drug Administration does not specifically restrict foods from being labeled as ‘fresh,’ so there are no set standards,” Swiniarski explains.

The best fresh food for cats is the one that your cat enjoys and is best for her. Cats tend to be creatures of habit, so you’ll transition her slowly and ensure she is introduced to the taste, aroma, and texture of fresh cat food in a proper way. You may need to adjust the transition process according to your cat’s reaction and digestive reaction.

Pros and Cons of Fresh Cat Food

Cat sitting on table looking at owner

We all know that cats are picky creatures, so one of the biggest benefits of fresh cat food is that it might be more appealing to your kitty than the alternatives. “Some cats may prefer the texture and taste of fresh foods as opposed to canned foods,” Swiniarski says. “And, depending on the brand and contents, fresh food may be easier to digest.”

Swiniarski is sure to add, though, that fresh food has a shorter shelf life. “In addition, fresh food cannot be left out to be grazed on throughout the day—cats will need to eat their fresh food within approximately an hour.”

Fresh Cat Food: What to Look For

Happy hungry cat eating from bowl

Regardless of what type of cat food you want to feed your fur baby—fresh or kibble, raw or canned—you want to make sure that the food meets the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) standards. “Whichever fresh food you feed your cat should be approved by AAFCO or a veterinary nutritionist. This ensures the diet is well balanced,” Swiniarski says. This information should appear somewhere on the food’s label. You’ll also want to consider:

Brand transparency: Is the company transparent about where its ingredients come from and how its recipes are prepared? Do they own and operate their own kitchen facilities? Is the food regularly tested by an independent laboratory for safety? See if this information is readily available. If you’re feeding fresh, raw cat food, find out what type of pathogen control methods the company uses and how those methods affect the nutritional benefits of the food.

Cat eating from food bowl

Quality of ingredients: Look for recipes that feature whole food ingredients and that are free of preservatives, fillers, artificial colors and flavors, and “mystery meats.” You may notice the term “human-grade” on some fresh pet foods, which means it is made from ingredients that are fit for human consumption. According to AAFCO’s definition, human-grade cat food must ensure that “every ingredient and the resulting products are stored, handled, processed, and transported in a manner that is consistent and compliant with regulations…for human edible foods.” (1) Keep in mind that the term “human-grade” is only used for pet foods. Food for humans is simply considered “edible” by the US Department of Agriculture (1).

Shelf life: If your fresh food is frozen, what is the freezer shelf life? This may range from six months to a year, depending on the brand. Most companies recommend thawing meals in the refrigerator overnight. Check the package to see how long the food will stay fresh in the fridge once defrosted (usually around 5-7 days). If your food arrives fresh, not frozen, find out if you are able to freeze any leftover food within a one-week window. Is the cat food fresh on arrival? Yes and then you will follow manufacturer instructions.

Satisfaction guarantee: If your cat is a picky eater, check to see whether the company will offer a full refund after a trial period of trying the new food—and how many days you have to let them know if you’re not satisfied.

Fresh Cat Food: Tips and Advice

Kitten eating from food bowl

If you’re thinking of changing your cat’s food to one of the delectable options above, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Most of the foods above are recommended for adult cats, not kittens. Kittens have different nutritional requirements. Furthermore, raw food is not suitable for kittens because kittens are more susceptible to food-borne illness than adult cats. If you’re switching your cat’s food, know that transitioning should be a gradual process, not a sudden switch. Most experts recommend spacing the transitions out over at least a week, first introducing a bit of the new food to their old food before gradually phasing the old food out (2). Changing food without a transitional period can give your kitty an upset stomach or other digestive issues.

Fresh Cat Food FAQs

How do I store fresh cat food?

Unless otherwise noted, fresh cat food is stored in the refrigerator. Follow the manufacturer’s directions on the package for use-by date and freezer storage instructions.

Will my cat like fresh cat food?

Cats can be finicky, but feeding your cat high-quality proteins with added veggies or fruits tends to please the palate of most felines. It all depends on your cat’s preferences, the texture of the food, the odor if any, and how you transition your kitty to a fresh cat food diet.

Is feeding fresh cat food risky to me or my cat?

Like any fresh food, if improperly stored or fed under less than ideal conditions, you risk bacterial issues or spoilage. However, following manufacturer’s directives will ensure the food stays fresh and ideal to serve your cat.

What if I want to stop or pause my fresh food for cat delivery?

Follow each brand’s shipping policy, if applicable, to temporarily pause or permanently stop delivery of your cat’s fresh food diet.

Is refrigerated cat food better for my cat?

Refrigerated cat foods generally contain high-quality proteins that are minimally processed, which ensures your cats get all the minerals, vitamins, and more that they need. Fresh cat food is often more palatable and appealing to finicky cats, too.

Do I transition my cat to fresh food the same I would kibble or canned?

Like all dietary adjustments in cats, a gradual and specific transition period should be implemented to avoid gastrointestinal issues. Follow instructions on the label of each brand’s packaging or wesite to ensure your cat is transitioned the right way. You can talk to your veterinarian for additional questions.

Is fresh wet cat food the same as fresh cat food?

Some pet parents use the terms fresh wet cat food and fresh cat food interchangeably, but there are slight differences in the preparation and packaging of each such as raw packaging, wet pouches, fresh cat food rolls, etc.

Top Kitten Food vs. Cat Food: What’s the Difference?

Some pet parents may wonder: Why not just choose a good cat food for kittens? But kittens have different nutritional needs than adult cats. So it’s important to feed kittens food that is specifically formulated for them.

“Both kittens and cats are obligate carnivores, so they require a certain amount of protein and amino acids in their diet to be healthy,” Dr. Emily Swiniarski, chief medical officer of PAWS Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, explains. “Where they differ is that kittens need more fat and protein in their diets than adult cats. This is because kittens grow very rapidly and need to support that growth.”

A kitten’s metabolism starts to slow around 8 or 9 months, and that’s when Swiniarski recommends transitioning your cat to adult food. “Don’t just swap out the food suddenly, though,” she cautions. “That can cause your cat to become ill.” She recommends introducing the adult cat food mixed in with the kitten food and eventually phasing the kitten food out.

Good Kitten Food: What to Look For

Cute cat looks at bowl of food to eat

So, how can you tell which cat food for kittens is best? Any food you feed your kitten should, at the very least, meet the requirements of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). “That’s the bare minimum,” Swiniarski says. Pet parents can see if their pet food has the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement on the label.

It’s also critical that kitten food be “cooked.” Not in the traditional sense, on the stovetop or in your oven, but you should avoid feeding a kitten raw food, Swiniarski says. “Raw food is more likely to carry harmful bacteria like salmonella, and kittens are particularly susceptible to food-borne illness,” she explains.

You’ll also have a choice between grain-free and grain-inclusive kitten foods. In addition, you’ll notice that some recipes feature deboned meats whereas others may include bone meal and organ meats. Swiniarski says there is no reason to avoid a kitten food that contains grain or bone meal if your kitten likes it. “There are a lot of myths about the harm foods with these ingredients can cause pets, but most of them are false,” she says.

Pet parents who need some help finding a healthy kitten brand should ask their veterinarian how to choose the most healthy kitten food formula. “They’ll help you make the right decision for you and your cat,” she says.

How Much to Feed a Kitten

pretty cat eating food in a bowl

To ensure kittens get the nutritional support they need, Swiniarski recommends giving them access to both wet food and dry food, and not limiting their food intake until they are grown. “Kittens need to have an unlimited supply of food at all times,” she says. “You can offer canned food twice or even three times a day and then have dry food available for when they’re hungry in between meals. They should be allowed to eat whenever and however much they want.” She adds, “As I mentioned before, kittens are rapidly growing. When they’re hungry, it’s because there is a nutritional need.”

Swiniarski also notes that pet parents should look for a cat food that offers a variety of flavors and textures within the same brand. “You want your kitten to grow into an adult cat who isn’t picky, and the best way to do that is to give them a variety when they are young.”

Every pet parent has experienced it at one point or another…the look. You know, it’s that beseeching, sometimes-reproachful gaze cats and dogs tend to give you when mealtime rolls around and their food bowl is empty.

Or maybe your pet is a little more vocal about their hunger, yowling or howling without rest until you fix the no-food situation…stat.

Even if your pet isn’t fixated on feeding time, consistent, regular meals are a must for all cats and dogs. And, in addition to providing the right food in the right quantity, pet parents must also keep food bowls clean and safe. My own kitty’s bowl sometimes requires several scrubbing sessions a week.

No doubt about it, keeping up with feeding chores can feel like a full-time job for any pet parent. Luckily, the Whisker company has a host of solutions designed to make taking care of our pets easy and automated, including the revolutionary Feeder-Robot.

Recently, my cats and I had the chance to put the Feeder-Robot to the test. I don’t know who was more excited about that…me or my cats. Here’s what we learned .

What is the Whisker Company?

Over 20 years ago, Brad Baxter was a busy pet parent, struggling (like so many of us) to stay on top of all the chores that came along with the two cats he’d inherited.

But, as an inventor, Baxter didn’t just see a stinky litter box he needed to empty. He saw a challenge. As he cleaned, he started brainstorming ways he could make the process easier on him and better for his cats. Many sketches and prototypes later, the Litter-Robot was born–an automatic, self-cleaning litterbox that handled the most dreaded litterbox duties so cat parents didn’t have to.

While the Litter-Robot wasn’t the first self-cleaning litterbox on the market, it worked a lot better than previous inventions. And, based on that success, Baxter founded the company now called Whisker with one mission: to make life with our pets endlessly better.

To that end, Whisker has continued to innovate, developing many other pet care solutions, including the Feeder-Robot, all designed, manufactured and serviced right here in the USA.

What is the Feeder-Robot and How Does it Work?

Launched in 2020, the Feeder-Robot is a more recent addition to the Whisker product arsenal and the first of the brand’s products designed for both dogs and cats. The Feeder-Robot is an automatic pet feeder that dispenses a pre-set amount of dry or semi-moist kibble at a scheduled time, making feeding your pet a breeze.

While there are a lot of automatic pet feeders on the market, the Feeder-Robot–much like the Litter-Robot before it–stands out from the competition. In addition to its thoughtful design and easy-to-use features, what really sets the Feeder-Robot apart is its user-friendly app.

The Feeder-Robot is WiFi-enabled, so you can control it from wherever you are using the Whisker app, which is compatible with both Apple and Android mobile devices.

The Whisker app allows you to program when and how much your cat is fed. Plus, it can notify you when it’s time for a refill and provide insights into your pet’s feeding habits. You can even use it to dispense a “snack” whenever you feel like Fluffy deserves an extra special treat.

The Feeder-Robot can be programmed to feed up to 8 portions per day. And the tamper-proof hopper holds a whopping 32 cups of food, so you don’t have to worry about constantly refilling it.

The Feeder-Robot even features anti-jam technology to ensure your pet doesn’t miss a meal due to unexpected technical difficulties…a big bonus for anyone who doesn’t relish dealing with a hangry pet.

The Feeder-Robot costs $299 and is available in four different color combinations (a black or white feeder with a clear or “smoke” hopper).

Putting the Feeder-Robot to the Test

That all sounds great, doesn’t it? But here’s the true test: I tried out the Feeder-Robot in the real world, introducing it to my crew of hungry, food-motivated felines. Here’s what the kitties and I thought about the Feeder-Robot test run.

I had tried out the Litter-Robot before, so I was familiar with Whisker brand products. However, I found the Litter-Robot a bit trickier to set up than the Litter-Robot. There was some assembly required and I had a little trouble with the instructions. After some trial-and-error, though, I got it up and running.

Though my cats had been slow to warm up to the Litter-Robot, they took to the Feeder-Robot immediately. However, our cats have been eating from an automatic pet feeder for a while, so that probably helped a lot.

For pets who may be hesitant to try new things, Whisker recommends giving them a day or two to get used to the Feeder-Robot before it’s even turned on. You might want to add a small handful of food or a few treats to the bowl to entice your pet.

Once they warm up to that, you can try filling the unit and pressing the feed button to get them used to the noise.

Though both my cats and I were accustomed to automatic feeders, it’s safe to say that the Feeder-Robot is an improvement over the previous feeder in almost every way.

Putting the feeder robot to the test

For one thing, it’s much quieter—we don’t even notice when it dispenses. It’s also impossible for our kitty to get food out of the feeder when it’s not dispensing (she had figured out a way to knock food out of our previous feeder). I really like the transparent hopper, which allows me to see how much kibble is left and whether I need to buy more.

Then there’s the app. It’s easy to use, which makes the feeder easy to program. I can also check and make sure food was dispensed if the cats are being dramatic and acting as though they’ve never eaten before in their lives.

Things We Like About the Feeder-Robot

  • Easy to program from the app or the unit
  • Super quiet
  • App keeps track of how much food dispenses and when
  • Transparent hopper lets you see when kibble is running low
  • Optional battery backup ensures pets are fed even if power goes out

Things to Consider

  • Setup was challenging
  • App had a bit of a learning curve
  • 1-year warranty included; 3-year warranty available for $50

Is the Feeder-Robot Worth It? Our Verdict

When I tell other pet parents about the Litter-Robot, I admit that it may not be for every cat. However, my experience with the Feeder-Robot was so positive, I recommend it to just about everyone I meet with no reservations.

Feeder robot at home with cat and owners

Though some might balk at the price tag, it my opinion the device is worth every penny. It’s quiet, efficient, and helps you keep track of how much your pet is eating. I also love the app functionality and reporting. But what I love most of all is the peace of mind I get knowing that my pets are fed regularly and in the right amount, without me having to lift a finger.

The Feeder-Robot does offer several add-on accessories for an extra charge, including a glass bowl for $30, a stainless steel bowl for $20, and special Feeder-Robot Cleaner Wipes for $15. I didn’t opt for these extras, so I can’t really say if they’re worth the splurge.

But I did find the basic unit very easy to clean, as is. You can wash the removable parts by hand, which Whisker suggests doing at least once a month.

Overall, our Feeder-Robot test was a huge success–for both me and my cats. While this advanced model costs more than other automatic feeders, it’s really not a fair comparison because it’s a much better product than the other automatic feeders I’ve tried in the past. Well worth the investment!

What Is Wood Pellet Cat Litter?

Kitty laying next to wood kitty litter

Wood pellet cat litter is a type of cat litter made from wood shavings (usually pine) pressed into pellets. It’s used just like traditional litter – you put it in a box and scoop your cat’s waste after they use it. Some pellet litter even clumps like clay litter!

Benefits of Wood Pellet Litter

There are several things that cat parents like about using wood pellet litter. These include:

  • It’s eco friendly
  • It doesn’t create dust
  • It can be healthier for some cats

Wood pellet cat litter may be a good option for cats with injuries because it is less likely to irritate open wounds.

“It’s good for cats that have asthma, as clay litter is usually scented and contains dust, which can become aerosolized and trigger a respiratory response,” adds Dr. Maranda Elswick, a Florida-based veterinarian and founder of The Meowing Vet, LLC.. “Wood pellet litter is typically unscented and is bigger, so it doesn’t break down into dust that can be inhaled.”

Potential Cons of Wood Pellet Cat Litter

While there are definite pros, pet parents should also be aware of some cons. These include:

  • Not as effective at masking odors
  • Tends to be more expensive
  • Picky cats may not like the feel of it.

As Dr. Elswick mentions, wood pellet cat litter is typically unscented, which means it’s not as good at masking odors as clay litter. This is especially apparent with solid waste, which needs to be removed promptly to prevent particularly gnarly smells. It’s a bit more expensive than clay litter as well. There’s also the fact that some cats are notoriously finicky and may not take to wood pellet litter, especially if you’re introducing it to them later in life.

Wood Pellet Cat Litter: Buyer’s Guide

Kitty Litter wood pellet at home

The good news is that there is likely a wood-based cat litter out there that meets your cat’s needs. However, you need to narrow down what those needs are to choose the best one. Here are some of the factors you should consider before making a purchase.

Choose your type of wood litter. First, you must decide between the two main types of wood cat litter – wood pellets and wood shavings. Each has its own advantages. Pellets are low mess and less likely to be tracked around the house. Shavings clump better but are dustier and more likely to stick to your cat’s fur. Both options are natural and typically low in chemical additives.

Consider environmentally-friendly options. Another question to ask before buying is how eco-friendly the litter is. Some wood pellet cat litters are made from reclaimed wood, others are compostable or even flushable.

Factor in the price. Wood pellet cat litter also tends to be more expensive than clay-based litter, so you may have to adjust your budget if you’re accustomed to clay litter prices.

Keep the litter box clean. All that said, wood-based litter is typically less effective at controlling odors than clay-based litter, thus requiring more frequent scooping to keep smells under control.

Tips for Using Wood Pellet Cat Litter

Guy scooping kitty litter at home

There isn’t much of a learning curve when it comes to switching to wood cat litter. Like clay litter, there needs to be a good amount of clean litter in your litter box, it needs to be scooped daily, and the entire box must be changed on a regular basis.

Some brands give a timeline of how often to change litter, but in truth, how often you need to change the litter depends on how often it’s used and by how many cats.

Dr. Elswick says that wood litter can be harder to scoop and pet parents tend to go through it more quickly than clay litter because it’s not as good at controlling odor. She does add, though, that the main consideration should be if your cat uses it.

“If your cat’s not using clay litter, and reliably uses wood litter, it’s a godsend,” she notes.

Wood Pellet Cat Litter FAQs

Want to know more about wood pellet cat litter? Here are the answers to a few frequently asked questions.

Are wood pellets safe for cat litter?

Wood pellet cat litter that is marketed specifically for use as cat litter is safe for your cat. However, it’s important to read labels and check ingredients before switching to a wood pellet litter option. And never buy wood pellets marketed for other uses. They may contain chemicals that are harmful to your feline friend.

Can you flush wood pellet cat litter?

Many brands of wood pellet cat litter are marketed as being biodegradable and compostable and some even encourage pet owners to flush the litter down the toilet. However, it’s best to weigh the potential risks to your plumbing with the convenience of flushing. If you have older plumbing, it may not be a good idea to flush wood pellet cat litter.

Does wood pellet cat litter smell?

Most wood pellet litter smells like wood chips (usually pine). Many brands note that enzymes in the wood neutralizes litter box odors, but it’s always best to stay on top of scooping to keep smells to a minimum.

What is the best cat litter box for wood pellets?

Almost any litter box can be used with wood pellet cat litter, but the one major exception seems to be self-cleaning boxes. Those typically require either clay litter or a special, proprietary litter. That said, you probably want a litter box that’s easy to clean, as you will have to be particularly diligent about scooping wood litter to keep on top of odors.

How to get cats to use wood pellet cat litter?

You can’t force a cat to use a certain type of litter. Some cats will take to wood pellet litter without much issue, but others simply will not use it. You can try the usual tricks, like litter attractant, or slowly transitioning from clay litter to wood pellets by gradually adding pellets to the litter box while phasing out the clay. But ultimately, the choice is up to your cat.

Where to buy wood pellets for cat litter?

Wood pellet litter is a bit harder to come by than traditional clay litter, but it can be found in most pet stores and online.

Over the past few years, a lot of people decided that the best way to deal with COVID-19 stress was to adopt a pet—in fact, according to the ASPCA, more than 23 million households added either a cat or dog to their family during the pandemic. What is a Cat Backpack?

Cat in a backpack sitting in a living room

In the most basic sense, a cat backpack is a backpack with features that make it ideal for transporting cats. Some cat backpacks also can be worn as a front-facing carrier.

Cat-friendly features typically included on cat backpacks include mesh panels for ventilation, viewing windows that allow your cat to look around, clips to attach a harness, a comfortable (and washable) mat, pockets for storing treats and other necessities, and comfortable straps that make it easy to wear even if you’re traveling long distances.

There are lots of cat backpacks on the market, and some are better suited for certain tasks than others. There are cat backpacks specifically designed for going on hikes, walking around a city, and long-haul air travel. Cat Backpack Buying Guide

Cat backpack on a walk

So, you’re ready to hit the road with your feline friend. What should you be looking for in a cat backpack? Pay close attention to these tips when shopping for a cat backpack.

Choose comfort over style. It’s important to find a backpack carrier that works for both you and your cat. Wearing a backpack that digs into your shoulders or hurts your back is not optimal, so be sure to take any bag for a spin to test for comfort before adding your cat into the mix.

Don’t skip safety features. Beyond comfort, look for those important cat safety features mentioned above including mesh panels, viewing windows, harness clips, a comfortable mat, and secure zippers.

Splurge on storage. When deciding on a cat backpack, consider extra storage options. Pockets, panels, and pouches in addition to the main compartment can store cat toys and treats. Storage also comes in handy for your own personal items like a phone and your keys.

Double check your measurements. Since cat backpack carriers come in all different sizes, it’s important to accurately measure your cat and compare those measurements to the manufacturer’s size chart to ensure your cat will fit comfortably in the carrier. There is no universal measurement or sizing system, so double check your measurements before ordering to get a great fit.

Consider compliance for air travel. If you plan to use your cat backpack as a way to transport your cat on a plane, make sure it meets your airline’s carry-on requirements and is compliant with air travel rules and regulations. Don’t assume that all cat backpacks are airplane friendly.

Cat Backpack FAQs

Are cat backpacks safe?

If you take the proper precautions, cat backpacks are indeed safe. You should be sure that the backpack is the right size (too big or too small could be uncomfortable for your cat), that it’s well-ventilated so your kitty doesn’t overheat, and that the straps and zippers are secure to prevent escape.

You also want to be sure that your cat feels safe and relaxed when on an adventure. This may take a bit of training to get Fluffy used to the backpack. Some cats may not take to backpacks at all, so pay close attention to your cat’s demeanor. If being in the backpack stresses your cat out, you may have to consider other travel options.

Do cats like backpacks?

Whether or not your cat will like a backpack will depend on your cat’s unique preferences. Some cats are completely comfortable in a cat backpack carrier, while others find backpacks stressful and uncomfortable.

It’s important to introduce the backpack to your cat slowly and associate it with positive experiences like treats and toys. Before traveling or going on an extended outing with the backpack, test placing your cat in the backpack inside your home for short periods of time first. Pay close attention to your cat’s body language. If you notice any signs of anxiety or distress, get your cat out of the backpack and try again at another time when your cat is calm.

How can you clean cat pee out of a backpack?

Accidents happen and if your cat pees in your backpack carrier, cleaning it to remove the stain and odor is important. First, choose a cat backpack carrier that is easy to clean. This means looking for a backpack with a removable, machine-washable mat. It will also be helpful if the whole backpack can be put into the wash.

In a pinch, use paper towels or a cloth to mop soak up any urine you can. Then, use a pet-safe enzyme cleaner and spray the area. Let it sit for 5-15 minutes and use paper towels or a cloth to dab the area again. Then spray the soiled area with the cleaner again and let it air dry. This should remove the stain and odor. If you can throw your cat backpack in the washing machine, allow it to air dry and do not put it in the dryer. The high heat of a dryer can trap the urine odor.

As much as we’d like it to be, caring for cats isn’t all snuggles and chin scritches—there are some dirty jobs that come with those adorable little felines! And perhaps the most dreaded cat-care task of all is tending to your cat’s litter box.

No one enjoys scooping poop, but pet parents should be cleaning their cats’ litter boxes at least once per day, ideally after every time the cat uses it. While a clean litter box is certainly a priority in my house, I don’t sit next to the box all day waiting for my kitties to go. After 24 hours and two cats, those litter boxes can get pretty funky.

If only there were a way to automate this task, perhaps a robot that could take care of the messiest parts of cat ownership? Luckily, we are living in an age of incredible innovation, and such a wonderful robot exists! Thanks to the Whisker company, with the Litter-Robot at your side, you may never have to scoop litter again!

I was lucky enough to put the Litter-Robot 3 Connect automatic litter box to the test, to see for myself how it handled the less savory aspects of pet parenthood. Here’s what I learned.

What Is the Litter-Robot?

Happy cats sitting with owner and whisker litter-robot review

The origins of the Litter-Robot can be traced back to 1999, when Brad Baxter, the device’s inventor, inherited two cats. He didn’t enjoy the process of scooping out the litter box (welcome to the club) and decided to do something about it. And thus the Litter-Robot, an automatic, self-cleaning litter box, was born.

Now, Baxter oversees Whisker as CEO and continues to redefine the litter box landscape–as well as feeding time–by developing and building functional, easy-to-use products for pet parents.

Today, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect is the highest-rated automatic litter box on the market and there have been more than 700,000 units sold all over the world. But the Whisker company didn’t just stop there. The brand has continued to innovate, and recently debuted the upgraded Litter-Robot 4 with even more features.

The Litter-Robot 4 is scheduled to start shipping out this summer. But you can reserve your upgraded model now, using this link below.

How Does Litter-Robot Work?

Cat sitting in the whisker litter-robot review

So how does the Litter-Robot help you avoid the dreaded chore of scooping poop every day? It’s actually pretty cool. First, you fill the Robot with clumping cat litter. It has to be clumping litter, and here’s why: The entire inside of the device rotates, sending its contents into a separate compartment. As the device continues to rotate, that compartment becomes separated from the main chamber of the litter box by what could best be described as a screen. Any solids, whether they be poop or clumps of urine, are trapped, while the loose, clean litter slides back out through the screen. The waste is dropped into a drawer under the main chamber and only clean litter remains—absolutely zero scooping involved.

The Litter-Robot goes through this cleaning “cycle” every time it’s used. Sensors can tell when a cat leaves the box, and then it automatically will start the cycle. You can also start a cycle manually by pressing a button on the device.

Depending on how many cats are using the Litter-Robot, you may only need to empty that drawer once per week. The Litter-Robot comes equipped with drawer liners, so all you need to do once the drawer is full is pull out the old one and replace it with a new one.

Cat using Litter-Robot 4
Litter-Robot 4

There are currently two types of Litter-Robots available from Whisker. The one I tested, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect, costs $549. The newly upgraded Litter-Robot 4 model that just debuted this summer costs $649. But, for a limited time, you can save $25 off that price when you purchase using this link.

Both Litter -Robot models are WiFi-connected so you can track how often your cat is using the litter box and get a better idea of how often you need to clean it without checking the drawer. The Litter-Robot 3 Connect is available in gray or beige and the Litter-Robot 4 comes in black or white.

So what’s the difference between the Litter-Robot 3 Connect vs Litter-Robot 4? The Litter-Robot 4 has all the core features of the Connect, like the patented sifting system, odor management, multi-cat design, and cat safety features, but they are enhanced with the latest technology. For example, the newest model uses laser and weight sensor technology to provide real-time litter and waste drawer levels and individual cat recognition. Other new features include reduced cycling noise as it sifts, an enlarged waste drawer, and a wider opening for increased cat comfort.

Putting the Litter-Robot to the Test

Out of the box, the Litter-Robot was extremely easy to set up. Literally, all I had to do was remove the packaging, add some litter, and plug it in. But then the challenging part began. Despite the use of treats, litter attractant, catnip, and even soiled litter from their previous litter box, two of our cats were not interested in using the Litter-Robot. I do not blame the Litter-Robot for this. One of our cats is a big girl, about 14 pounds. We think the Litter-Robot was a bit too small for her, as she prefers a roomy litter box. The other kitty is very particular and does not handle change well, even for a cat.

whisker litter-robot review putting it to the test

Shop now and save $25 off any Litter-Robot purchase

After a week of zero interest in the Litter-Robot, we decided to bring in a ringer—we have a third cat who lives separately from the other two. She took to the Litter-Robot after a few days and so far, everything is going very well. The automatic function is quiet; you really can’t hear it unless you’re in the same room. There hasn’t been a need to clean it beyond emptying the drawer, which took approximately six days to fill. The immediate storage of waste keeps things smelling pretty fresh overall, but I will note that changing out the liner in the drawer is a pretty unpleasant task.

Things We Like About the Litter-Robot

  • Ease of set-up
  • Quiet cleaning cycle
  • Reduces odors
  • Looks cool (not an eyesore like many litter boxes)
  • Easy to empty
  • You can use the Whisker app to check the waste drawer level, monitor activity, and control settings, but the unit functions with or without the app.

Things to Consider

  • The main “globe” is fairly small, so bigger cats might not be able to use it
  • The litter level should be kept at, or just below, the raised fill line. People generally add more litter when they empty the waste drawer, but if you have cat that is finicky about litter levels (like ours), you might choose to top it off more frequently.
  • A lot of litter gets outside the box; you need a mat to catch it.

Is the Litter-Robot Worth It? Our Verdict

Litter robot sitting in home with cat

I would say that overall, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect is worth the investment. It won’t eliminate the need to clean your litter box entirely, but it significantly decreases the amount of time you spend directly dealing with your cat’s poop, which is a win.

While I haven’t had a chance to test-drive the Litter-Robot 4 yet, I’m very eager to check it out. Even though the price is a bit higher, the added functionality is designed to make this model even more hands-off. This model uses advanced laser and weight sensor technology to analyze four safety zones within the unit, to make absolutely sure your cat is always safe. Plus, those sensors provide real-time litter and waste levels, so you always know when it’s time to change the litter or empty the waste drawer.

Other new features include a WhisperQuiet cleaning cycle, an enlarged waste drawer, a wider opening for cats to climb into, and an optional system to neutralize litter box odors. That’s a lot more bang for your buck. And, considering just how much most pet parents dread litter box chores, that’s worth a lot.

Whether you choose the Litter-Robot 3 Connect or the Litter-Robot 4, the most critical factor to consider is your cat’s personality. If you know that your cat hates change, don’t try to force her to use the Litter-Robot. Even if you hate scooping your old litter box, it’s still preferable to cleaning up after your cat decides to pee or poop somewhere she’s not supposed to.

Luckily, if you find that your cat refuses to adapt to the Litter-Robot, Whisker has a generous return policy. If for any reason you are unsatisfied with the Litter-Robot, you can return it within 90 days for a full refund.

Good nutrition is important for pets of all ages, but senior cat food is essential for those who reach their golden years. If you’re a cat parent whose favorite feline is approaching ripe old age, it might be time to consider switching to a food specifically formulated for senior cats.

Dr. Adam Miller, a board-certified internal medicine specialist at NorthStar VETS in Robbinsville Township, N.J., says that for nutritional purposes, a cat is recognized as “senior” at just 7 to 8 years old, and is considered “geriatric” between the ages of 10 and 12. “However, it is important to keep in mind that cats can live for a very long time and it is not uncommon for my feline patients to be 18-22 years of age,” he adds.

So, is your cat celebrating his 7th birthday this year? It may be time to make the switch to senior food. Here’s all that you need to know.

Senior cats’ nutritional needs are closely tied to their overall health. “Senior cats become less active and tend to have reduced lean body mass, which ultimately results in a lower basal metabolic rate,” Miller explains. “Additionally, senior cats are more prone to the development of diseases that alter nutritional requirements.” This means that a cat with chronic kidney disease will have different nutritional needs than a cat with gastrointestinal issues.

If you ask your veterinarian what is the best cat food for older cats, they are likely to recommend one or more based on your cat’s individual needs, preferences, and health concerns.

While there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution for old cat food nutrition, Miller notes that the most important food consideration for a senior cat is managing a consistent weight, which can impact longevity, and keeping your cat hydrated. “Aging can impair thirst drive. I typically recommend either transitioning to a moist diet or adding low salt broth, meat juices (i.e. tuna), or ‘pet drinks,’” he says.

Senior Cat Foods vs. Regular Cat Foods: What’s the Difference?

Cat head tilted on the couch

A recent study showed that senior cat foods generally differ from regular cat food in one major way: food marketed as “senior” cat food has significantly more fiber than “regular” cat food. Further, the study found no major difference in the crude protein, fat, and mineral concentrations between foods (1).

That doesn’t mean that all senior cat foods are the same – the amount of protein, fat, and fiber can vary greatly from brand to brand. Miller recommends that senior cats get a moderate protein diet, that is, food that is 30 to 45 percent crude protein. He also says that senior cats should get more calorically dense food. He again notes that a food that works for one cat may not work for another.“Every cat is an individual and there is no one diet that fits all cats. But, regardless of the formulation of the diet, I typically recommend higher protein, lower carbohydrate foods, and these can be in both wet and dry formulations.”

Senior Cat Food: What to Look For

Most commercially available cat foods will meet your pet’s nutritional needs. Miller explains, “Commercial cat foods meet certain base-level criteria for nutrition. I recommend foods manufactured by companies with long-established histories of making quality food, that consult with veterinary nutritionists, and have stringent quality control measures.”

While counting calories isn’t the most fun activity, Miller adds that cats should be consuming about 200 calories per day. “I recommend quantifying how many calories your cat is eating on a per-day basis so you can quickly recognize a decrease in appetite,” he says.

Further, if your senior cat is experiencing age-related health issues, you should talk to your veterinarian about which diet would be most beneficial.

Senior Cat Food: Tips and Advice

As you consider which older cat food food would work best for your senior kitty, perhaps the most important factor is whether the food helps your cat maintain a consistent, healthy weight. “It is vital that senior cats stay at a healthy weight,” Miller says. “At checkups, your family veterinarian will check your cat’s weight, muscle tone, and body condition to make sure they’re not too lean or too overweight. To maintain good health, senior cats should eat enough appropriate food to maintain their weight. If you notice a change in your senior cat’s weight—either an increase or decrease—or if they stop eating and using the litter box, see your veterinarian as soon as possible.”

As a pet parent, making sure that your dog eats delicious and nutritious food is of the utmost importance. After all, a good diet helps ensure that your best friend will live a long and happy life. While many pet parents put a lot of thought into which food they’ll feed their dog, many don’t realize that similar consideration should be given to the dog food container.

Dog food storage can be just as important as the food itself. Improper storage can shorten a food’s shelf life, attract pests like mice and ants, and lead to spoilage, mold, and other contaminants that could make your dog ill.

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a dog food container. Those include the material the container is made from and how much food you want to store at a time, as well as your environment (more on that below). If you’re looking for a new place to store your dog’s food, read on for more information and a list of our top dog food containers.

Dog Food Storage: Why It’s Important

Pet parents should familiarize themselves with the ins and outs of dog food and its storage to determine which container is best for them. Dr. Veronica Jones, a veterinarian on the emergency and critical care team at NorthStar VETS Emergency, Trauma, and Specialty practice in New Jersey, says that most unopened pet food has a shelf life of at least a year.

However, pet parents should be diligent in ensuring their pet food isn’t served past its expiration date. “Always look at the expiration date before you purchase [pet food],” she says, “and check what’s on your shelf or pantry at home periodically.”

Jones notes that opened canned food should be stored in the fridge and used within a week. Dry food, once opened, lasts a little more than a month when stored properly.

Temperature is also important.

“To keep food from spoiling, store it in your home where it will be kept at a normal indoor temperature (below 80 degrees),” Jones adds. “Exposure to extreme heat or humidity can sap food of its nutrients and shorten its shelf life.”

What to Look For in a Dog Food Container

Dog food in container

There are certain features that separate a good dog food container from a bad one. Here’s what you should look for in a dog food container:

A moisture barrier. “The best containers for bagged dog food will keep it visible and dry,” Jones says.

Moisture is the enemy of dry dog food. “If you store dry food in an area where it can absorb moisture (like a garage or shed), it can grow mold and other toxins,” Jones explains.

A tight lid. You’re not only keeping moisture and pests out of your dog’s food, you’re also trying to keep your dog from snacking. So a lid that closes tightly is essential. “It’s important to remember that dogs sometimes love their food so much that they will seek it out,” says Jones. “If the food is easily accessible, they may overindulge and [develop] food bloat. This is why dog food should be stored in a container and in a space that will prevent your dog from getting into it.”

Easy to clean. And finally, you want a container that can be cleaned. “If you use a container to store your food, make sure you clean and dry it between refills,” says Jones. “Dry food stored with moisture can grow mold, and old food residue can contaminate new food.”

How We Ranked Our Top Dog Food Storage Containers

So, let’s dive into our top dog food containers. We took a number of factors into consideration when compiling this list.

First, we looked for containers that met Jones’ recommendations: tight lids that keep moisture (and animals) out, easy-to-clean materials, and, in many cases, transparent containers that let you see how much food you have left.

We spoke to the dog owners in our lives about their food storage methods and weighed their opinions as well.

Then, of course, we took into account our own personal experiences with dog food storage. Price, availability, and online reviews also played a part in the decision-making process.

9 Best Dog Food Storage Containers

Overall Winner

Our Pick: IRIS Weather Pro Airtight Pet Food Storage Container

Boots and Barkley dog food container

As far as we’re concerned, the best dog food container is this Weather Pro Airtight Pet Food Storage Container from IRIS. Made from sturdy BPA-free plastic, it comes in three sizes (10 lb, 25 lb, and 50 lb), has translucent and pearl-colored options  (both of which allow you to see how much dog food you have left), and has an airtight lid that locks.

The locking latches are a great feature. Not only do they help the lid stay snug and sealed for food freshness, but they also keep curious pups (or other critters!) out. Plus, the 25 lb and 50 lb versions have removable caster wheels, so you can easily roll the container rather than trying to lug it around.

Highlights

  • Comes in three sizes so you can get one that best fits your needs.
  • Airtight seal keeps food fresh.
  • Locking lid keeps mischievous dogs and other pests out.
  • BPA-free plastic.
  • Good price point.

Things to Consider

  • The 10 lb container does not have wheels.
  • If you’re looking for a super stylish storage solution, this basic plastic container probably isn’t it.

It’s made from a food-grade BPA-free HDPE (high-density polyethylene) plastic and uses a threaded locking system to ensure freshness. It has handles for grip and the lid is easy to spin on and off.

While experts like Jones don’t typically recommend storing pet food outside or in a shed, this container was designed for more rugged use and can be kept in garages, barns, and sheds if necessary.

The 25lb container shown here is one of the most popular models, but Gamma2 offers a variety of containers for pet owners in different shapes and sizes. Some are stackable and some can be mounted on walls.

Highlights

  • Truly airtight.
  • Comes with a scoop.
  • Stackable design.
  • Can be stored safely in a garage or shed.

If you do want to decant your kibble, the Buddeez Roll Away Pet Food Container holds up to 50 quarts.

The container’s lid is gasket-sealed, so food will definitely stay fresh. We also like that you have to tilt the container to use the recessed wheels, which makes it easy for people to move, but difficult for dogs to do the same.
