The shape of a dog’s ear canal makes them more prone to developing infections than their human counterparts. While our ear canal is relatively straight, a dog’s is shaped like an L. This creates an area where fluid can collect — creating the perfect environment for bacteria, yeast, or fungus to thrive. 

Dog ear infections tend to fall into three categories:

• Otitis externa: Affects the external ear canal
• Otitis media: Occurs within the middle ear
• Otitis interna: Occurs within the inner ear 

The most common type of ear infection in dogs is otitis externa, which is usually easily treated. But if left untreated, it can develop into otitis media or otitis interna. Middle and inner ear infections tend to be a lot more serious and painful, requiring more extensive treatment. 

Dog ear infections can be caused by a range of factors, including:

• Parasites: Ear mites, ticks, and the mites that cause mange can be the cause of an ear infection in dogs. Infections due to ear mites are more common in puppies than in older dogs. 
• Foreign bodies: This is anything that gets into your dog’s ear that shouldn’t be there. Common examples include grass awns or sand that then cause inflammation, allowing an infection to take hold. 
• Bacteria: Many different species of bacteria, including Staphylococcus, can trigger ear infections, usually when a dog’s ear is already compromised, through excessive moisture or inflammation.

• Tumors: Both benign and malignant tumors can trigger inflammation and ear infections. 
• Excessive moisture: Swimmer’s ear can be a problem in dogs who spend a lot of time in the water. 
• Health conditions: Ear infections can be caused by a range of health conditions, including autoimmune, endocrine, and keratinization disorders. 
• Idiopathic: If your dog suffers from persistent ear infections that have been investigated by your vet but no obvious cause is found, it is considered idiopathic.

Your dog’s breed can also play a role in whether they are more prone to ear issues. “Long floppy ear breeds and those with excessive hair in the outer ear canals are the breeds most susceptible to ear infections,” explained Dr. Fleck, DVM and co-host of The Pet Buzz.  

Research has found that the breeds most susceptible to ear infections include:

• Chinese Shar Pei
• Labradoodles
• Beagles
• Golden Retrievers

But any dog with long, floppy ear flaps will tend to be at a higher risk of ear infections than dogs with pointy ears. 

6 Signs of Ear Infection in Dogs

So, what are some warning signs of ear infections in dogs? Sometimes, changes in your dog’s behavior will be easy to pick up on, and other times you might not notice anything is wrong with your pet. Here are six common signs of ear infections in dogs to watch for:

1. Head shaking 

If your dog has long ears, you might have come to love the distinctive sound of their floppy ear shake — but excessive head-shaking can be a sign of an ear infection. If your dog can’t stop shaking their head, give their ears a closer look. 

2. Scratching and rubbing 

Ear infections can make a dog’s ears very itchy. In an attempt to soothe this, your dog might scratch their ears with a paw or rub their heads along the wall or floor. You might also hear your dog crying or whimpering as they rub their ears.  

3. Inflammation or swelling

A dog’s ears may become inflamed, swollen, and hot to the touch. In extreme cases, your dog may get a hematoma (a blood collection under the skin), which will result in extreme swelling. 

4. Excessive ear wax 

A little ear wax is normal for dogs, and it’s usually light brown or yellow in appearance. Other ear wax colors, such as gray, green, dark brown, black, or red, can indicate an infection.

How to Prevent Ear Infections in Dogs

To lower your dog’s risk of ear infections, there are a few steps you can take at home. First, get into the habit of regularly checking your dog’s ears and watching for signs of infection. If your dog has floppy ears, lift their ear flap and check the visible section of their ear canal. 

“Proper ear cleaning is recommended twice weekly for vulnerable breeds,” Dr. Fleck says. Raw feeding for dogs isn’t a new concept, but the trend has grown in popularity in the past few years, thanks in large part to YouTube and TikTok videos. A raw dog food diet typically consists of uncooked meat, ground bones, and organs, as well as fruits and veggies (the safe ones for dogs, of course). 

Raw dog diets can be made from scratch or bought from commercial pet food manufacturers. These days, pet parents have access to a wide range of pre-made raw dog food options, including frozen, freeze-dried, and dehydrated meals, as well as hybrid products like freeze-dried raw and kibble blends.

We spoke to veterinary nutritionists about how to avoid some potentially dangerous mistakes if you want to feed your dog a raw food diet.

Mistake #1: Going the DIY Route  

Many popular videos on social media—not to mention the scads of raw food recipes you can find by Googling—tout the benefits of raw food diets for dogs. However, veterinary nutritionists or food scientists do not create much of this content.

“The problem with raw diets is the same one with home diets—dietary efficacy,” says Dr. Stewart Morgan of Los Angeles Animal Specialty Emergency & Rehabilitation (LAASER).

In other words, many homemade diets for dogs, whether raw or cooked, are not properly nutritionally balanced, Dr. Morgan says. They often lack nutrients that dogs cannot get from non-food sources, such as vitamin D and calcium. “Most raw diets are high in protein and phosphorus, but they’re calcium deficient,” he explains.

Dr. Belen Perez Marquez of ARCH Veterinary Services in San Jose, Calif., suspects that “99 percent of raw meals are unbalanced at home.” Unbalanced diets (raw or not) can cause major health problems in dogs, she warns.

One way to avoid nutritional deficiencies is to feed a complete and balanced commercial raw dog food, such as Instinct Raw Freeze-Dried Raw Meals, that follows the nutrient profiles established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Read the label closely to determine whether the product is a complete and balanced meal on its own, or if it’s intended for supplemental feeding, like a raw dog food topper.

Mistake #2: Not Storing Food Properly

Raw meats, bones, and organs are not like raw fruits and vegetables. They can’t just be left on the counter or in the fridge for long, and they need proper handling.

To inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria like salmonella and listeria, store raw meat or commercially made fresh or frozen raw dog foods, like Instinct Raw Frozen Meals, in the freezer until you are ready to use them. Mistake #3: Not Handling Food Properly

Unsafe storage of raw meals and ingredients is directly related to mishandling food in the kitchen. When handling raw dog food, remember that harmful bacteria like salmonella and listeria can easily spread. Anything that comes into contact with raw meat, organs, or eggs—kitchen utensils, pet food bowls and scoops, countertops, cutting boards, your fingers, and yes, your dog—can become contaminated.

Dogs can carry the bacteria in their feces or saliva and spread it to people and other household pets—and they might not even show signs of infection. Older adults, young children, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women are at higher risk for more severe symptoms. “Say you have a baby in the house, and the dog licks the baby,” Dr. Morgan says. “Or you take your dog into an assisted living facility with immunocompromised people.” Symptoms of salmonella infection in humans include diarrhea (that can be bloody), fever, and stomach cramps, and that’s not the only infection that a raw diet can spread.

To prevent infection, you should thoroughly wash your hands after handling raw pet food and after touching potentially contaminated surfaces or objects, the FDA advises. You should also thoroughly clean and disinfect any surface or object that came into contact with raw food.

Do not let your dog lick your face or anyone else’s face, especially after your pet has eaten a raw meal. Likewise, you should wash your hands if your dog licks them. Finally, if you have young children or immunocompromised family members, consider the risks before selecting a raw diet for your pet. 

Mistake #4: Romanticizing Raw Diets (Your Dog ‘Is Not a Wolf’)

Your bouncy (or maybe lazy) pooch has a wild bloodline. Somewhere around 15,000 years ago, give or take a couple millennia, domestic dogs diverged from wolves (1). And wolves, being wild, eat animals (meat, organs, blood, and bone) that they hunt. Obviously, they don’t cook their meals first.

This ancestry from wolves is the connection often made as to why a domestic dog should eat raw. But for Dr. Morgan, that’s a thin justification. “Someone’s French Bulldog or Chihuahua is not a wolf,” he says. “That is a domesticated animal that we’ve bred to rely on us.”

On average, wolves only live from 6 to 8 years in the wild, according to the PBS program Nature. Those years are often tough, Dr. Morgan says. “It’s feast or famine in the wild,” he says. “Malnutrition is a major cause of death. Animals in the wild are not necessarily healthy. Existence is a very, very low bar for health.”

Cooked and heat-treated pet foods, he says, have eliminated most of the problems that come with consuming animals caught in the wild—abundance and regularity of eating, for one, but also  problems that can arise from a lack of quality control. After all, not every animal caught and eaten is itself healthy or disease free, and that can cause problems for whatever eats it.

In other words, if romanticizing your dog as an ancient wild creature is the motivation for going raw, Dr. Morgan says, you might be barking up the wrong tree.

Mistake #5: Improperly Transitioning to Raw Food

Changing your dog’s diet should not happen overnight. A proper transition period can take from 10 days to three weeks, depending on the individual dog and their gut tolerance. Taking it slow will reduce—but is not guaranteed to eliminate—the likelihood of gastrointestinal issues or other digestive ailments that can come with switching your dog’s food.

Mistake #6: Not Weighing the Pros and Cons

Consider whether the benefits of feeding raw dog food outweigh the risks for your individual pet and your family. Formal scientific evidence is still lacking when it comes to the perceived health benefits of raw feeding. “There’s a lot of information on the internet that claims [a raw diet] is healthy, but none of these are proven,” Dr. Marquez says.

While there are plausible claims that raw feeding may lead to better digestibility and improved stool quality, many other claims remain anecdotal or opinion based (2).

Since research in this field is ongoing, if you do choose to feed your dog a raw food diet, be sure to look for brands that invest in science-led formulas. For example, Instinct has partnered with a university-led research program to better understand how raw diets affect dogs’ health. So far, they have demonstrated that puppies fed raw have fewer environmental allergies as adults and a reduced risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease later in life compared to puppies fed kibble (3), but research on these issues is still ongoing. There is further ongoing research to see how a raw diet can positively impact mobility issues, chronic ear infections, and cancer in dogs.

Mistake #7: Not Researching Raw Dog Food Brands

If you are feeding commercial raw dog food, look for reputable pet food manufacturers that demonstrate a commitment to food safety and quality. Many raw pet food manufacturers use a treatment method called High-Pressure Processing (HPP) on frozen and freeze-dried raw foods to kill harmful bacteria. Some brands may even carry special certifications, such as Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification. 

You should also check to see what types of experts the company has enlisted to develop their products—such as veterinarians, vet techs, food scientists, and nutritionists—and find out where the company sources their ingredients. 

Mistake #8: Not Involving a Veterinarian

If you really want to transition your dog to a raw diet, Dr. Morgan recommends speaking with your veterinarian or a veterinary nutritionist first. If you have a senior dog with a health condition, for example, your veterinarian might advise against feeding a raw dog food diet because certain pets can be more susceptible to food-borne illnesses.

In addition, a high-protein raw diet is not recommended for dogs with kidney or liver issues. Raw diets might also contain bone fragments that can pose a choking hazard for your pet.

As mentioned earlier, feeding a homemade raw dog food diet can put your pet at risk of nutritional deficiencies. Even if you decide to go with a commercially made raw product, it’s still best to consult with your vet to ensure you are feeding the right formula for your dog’s life stage and the appropriate portion size. Overfeeding can lead to unhealthy weight gain or an overabundance of a particular vitamin or mineral.

A belly band is a wrap that gets placed around your pup’s bottom area to prevent them from peeing on surfaces in your home. It can also be used as a training tool. “A belly band may help prevent some dogs from urine marking,” says Bradley Phifer, a certified dog trainer and executive director of Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). “However, most owners choose a belly band for their male dogs to contain the urine and to protect furniture and other household items from damage caused by urine. This is more of a management solution than a training strategy.” 

Belly bands are designed specifically for male dogs and can be used for all life stages – from puppyhood to senior years. Available in either reusable or disposable form, they come in a variety of fabrics and materials including cotton, polyester, and microfiber. A dog belly band that’s designed as more of a training tool may not offer the same level of protection as a multi-layered product.

Dog Belly Bands Vs. Diapers

Unlike belly bands, dog diapers can be used on both males and females. While belly bands go around a dog’s waist and cover the private area, dog diapers more closely resemble human diapers, according to Laura Hills, a certified dog trainer and owner of The Dogs’ Spot, based in North Kansas, Missouri. “They enclose the entire waist and bottom. There is an opening for the tail and rear legs, but the rest of the bottom area is enclosed by the diaper.”

Why Your Dog Might Need a Belly Band

If your dog is prone to having accidents, is a senior, and/or has health or behavioral issues, a belly band can be an asset. “Belly bands are useful for male dogs who are incontinent, inclined to pee on vertical surfaces, or struggling with house training,” says Hills.

They can also be useful in discouraging inappropriate urination. The idea is that a dog wearing the belly band will become averse to the discomfort of being wrapped in a wet cloth.

Puppies can wear them, too, though Hills warns against using them for training purposes unless you have to. “I’d prefer my puppy not learn to eliminate inside and into either of these,” she says. “I’d prefer they are trained to eliminate in the proper place.” If, however, there’s a reason that learning these skills is difficult (for example, a puppy who is used to peeing in a crate due to neglect) or the wraps are used in the short-term as an added layer of protection, she says they might be a good option.

Belly bands can also curb marking behavior. A dog who is unable to pee on surfaces can’t leave a scent, which prevents future marking. “They may be inclined to attempt to mark, they just won’t get the urine on the vertical surface as it will be contained in the belly band,” explains Hills.

A dog belly band can come in handy even if your dog doesn’t have a lot of accidents. For example, on frigid or icy days when you may not be able to take your dog outside, they can use the band instead of peeing in the house.

They can also be used as a training tool in certain circumstances, especially if you want to discourage marking behavior or work with rescue dogs who have behavioral issues.

Dog belly bands are relatively simple to use. Unlike a dog sweater or raincoat that you have to maneuver over your dog’s head and paws, a belly band simply gets wrapped around their lower half.

Belly Bands for Dogs: The Cons

Belly Bands can be messy. “Owners must change their dog’s belly band multiple times throughout the day to avoid skin irritation and maintain adequate hygiene,” says Phifer.

There’s also the comfort factor. “Some dogs will try to chew off the belly band because they find them uncomfortable,” Phifer adds.

Plus, belly bands for dogs can sometimes mask an underlying problem. According to Phifer, “The indoor elimination may be a lack of house training, a sign of another behavior problem such as a conflict between two resident dogs, or a medical condition such as incontinence.” 

Lastly, it’s important to keep in mind that even if you use a belly band on your dog, accidents can still happen.

Dog Belly Band Buying Guide

There are a few things to consider when purchasing a belly band for your dog.

Fabric and material. With reusable belly bands for dogs, look for durable material that can withstand frequent washes and is easy to clean. Keep seasonal changes in mind as well. Fleece, for example, may be a good option for colder months, but not during warmer ones.

Fit and size. Sizing is one of the biggest issues pet parents have with wraps. “The belly band or diaper needs to be tight enough to stay on comfortably but not so tight that it’s cutting off circulation. If it’s uncomfortably tight, dogs will be inclined to try to remove it,” says Hills.

Carefully read the manufacturer’s sizing instructions to ensure the best fit. And instead of guesstimating your dog’s size, use a measuring tape for accuracy.  

The closure should also be wide enough to allow for easy adjustments. This is an especially important feature if you have a growing puppy.

Disposable vs. reusable. While both have their advantages and disadvantages, Phifer prefers reusable male belly wraps. “Go with a machine-washable belly band with elastic and a Velcro strap for ease of use and comfort for your dog,” he advises.

Washable belly bands are also easier on the environment, and since they can be reused, they are typically more cost-effective.

Brock, DVM. “To understand the causes of food allergies, it’s important to understand how they develop. Food allergies are triggered by an interaction between your dog’s immune system and certain proteins in his diet. These proteins stimulate an immune response that results in inflammation of the skin or gastrointestinal tract, which is why they’re often referred to as ‘allergic reactions.’”

Food sensitivities, which often present similarly to allergies, refer to any adverse food reaction that’s non-immunologic—basically, a food that just doesn’t sit right with your pet’s stomach.

There are several ingredients in dog food that your pet might be allergic to. “The most common food allergens in dogs include beef, dairy products, chicken, eggs, and fish,” explains Dr. Brock. Uncommon food allergens may include:

• Rice
• Soy

Dog Food Allergy Symptoms

The symptoms of a food allergy in dogs can be subtle, and they may often overlap with symptoms of an environmental allergy. “The symptoms of a dog food allergy are often difficult to diagnose,” explains Dr. Brock. She notes that some of the symptoms you might see include: 

• Itching and scratching around the face, paws, and neck
• Redness and swelling of the skin
• Chewing paws or rubbing them against the ground
• Hair loss

On the other hand, novel protein dog foods are often available over-the-counter. If your dog is allergic to a common protein like beef or chicken, you can try switching them to a food made from an alternative protein source, such as duck, salmon, or turkey. Over-the-counter diets may not completely exclude all other proteins, making them less effective than hydrolyzed protein diets, but they can be effective for mild food allergies.

Another common choice for dogs with allergies is a limited ingredient diet, also called LID. “Limited ingredient foods have fewer ingredients than other types of pet food,” explains Dr. Brock. “This makes them easier to digest and less likely to cause an allergic reaction in your dog.” These dog foods tend to be the most affordable option, and they’re typically made using a single protein source, making it easier to find a formula that won’t trigger your dog’s allergies. 

When shopping for any type of dog food, you’ll want to look at the food’s AAFCO Nutritional Adequacy Statement. This statement is typically located on the back of the bag and should indicate that the formula is a “complete and balanced” source of nutrition. The statement will also specify what life stages the food is designed for, such as adults and/or growing puppies.

How Does Arnica for Dogs Work?

It does this by encouraging capillaries to dilate, and by increasing lymphatic drainage.”

Arnica tablets and pellets come in a variety of potencies from 6C (being the least potent) to 30C, and 200C (the most potent). Your holistic veterinarian can advise you on a suitable potency depending on what your pet is experiencing. Most topical preparations can be used 2-3 times a day to help with inflammation and provide additional pain relief for pets. 

Arnica is used commonly by holistic veterinarians for strains, sprains, muscle aches, and other injuries where there is bruising. Animals that need arnica are usually in great pain following an injury. This remedy makes a very useful one to have in your pet’s first aid kit.

How to Use Arnica for Dogs

Arnica can be found in a variety of forms, including topical creams, gels, tablets, pellets, oils, and as a tincture. Each is useful for different ailments and levels of pain, and you can combine different forms of arnica to achieve the best results. 

Although arnica can be safe for dogs in the correct form and dose, “the type of arnica that is most suitable for your dog should always be decided by your veterinarian,” says Dr. Klein, who adds that it’s essential to discuss your dog’s symptoms with your veterinarian first, before beginning any treatment.

Because certain topical arnica products can be toxic when ingested, make sure that your dog doesn’t lick it off after it’s applied. If you do use topical arnica, Dr. Klein suggests keeping a close eye on your dog immediately afterwards, and applying the medicine at mealtime or before a walk to distract them from licking it off. If you think your dog has ingested arnica, contact your veterinarian.

Dr. Klein also suggests avoiding the use of arnica on broken skin or open wounds, as it can impair healing and cause unwanted bleeding. Since it also increases blood flow and circulation, you should never give it to a dog taking any medications that thin the blood, because it could cause excessive bleeding. 

Avoid giving it to your dog leading up to a surgery, as well, because it could cause unwanted and excessive bleeding, putting your pet at additional risk. “Always mention all herbs and supplements that you are giving to your dog, especially prior to any medical or surgical procedures, or if your dog has underlying medical conditions,” says Dr. Klein.
