Can Dogs Get Fevers? 

Just like any member of your human family, a sick dog may run a fever when they are ill. But a dog fever isn’t exactly the same as a human fever. A dog’s healthy temperature runs hotter than humans—typically around 99-101 degrees Fahrenheit, but can go as high as 102 in excited dogs. The fact that a dog’s normal body temperature is higher than a human’s means dog fevers are higher than human fevers, too.

If your dog’s temperature rises above 103 degrees F, this is a sign your pet either has a fever,  hyperthermia or heat stroke. When their temperature rises above 106 degrees F, this indicates a severe and potentially high body temperature.

How to Tell if a Dog Has a Fever 

You might have heard that if a dog’s nose is warm and dry, they have a fever, or that red eyes signal illness, however, the most reliable way to tell if your pet has a fever is to take their temperature using a thermometer.

Keep in mind that the number on the thermometer only tells part of the story, says Dr. Marcus Dela Cruz, DVM, who is known as The Friendly Vet. 

“Body temperature is a measurement of the body’s basic function and is considered a ‘vital sign,’ but it is not as straightforward as people may think,” Dela Cruz explains. 

A sick pet can still have a normal temperature, and a healthy pet may have an abnormal one, says Dela Cruz. But it’s important to remember that while taking your dog’s temperature is a great way to get some concrete information (rather than relying on whether your dog “looks” or “acts” sick), it’s not definitive. 

“My general rule of thumb is if a pet parent is concerned enough about their pet’s health to take their temperature, then it’s best to take the pet to the veterinarian,” advises Dela Cruz.

Dog Fever Symptoms

So when should you take your dog’s temperature? Signs that might indicate your dog is sick with a fever include: 

• Lethargy or general lack of energy
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Ears feel warmer to the touch than normal
• Shivering

Remember that these are not the only signs of a fever-related sickness, and your dog can still have a fever without exhibiting these symptoms.

How to Take a Dog’s Temperature

You can use a few different methods to take your dog’s temperature, each with varying degrees of difficulty and accuracy. Here’s how to check a dog’s temp:

Rectal Dog Temperature: Dela Cruz recommends taking your pet’s temperature rectally because this method provides the most accurate reading. To do this, gently insert the tip of a dog rectal thermometer gently into your pet’s rectum—about 1 inch for small dogs and 2 inches for larger dogs. To ease any discomfort your dog may feel, you should use a pet-safe lubricant on the tip of the thermometer.  

A rectal thermometer for dogs can be tricky if you are unsure of proper technique or if your dog resists. Your veterinarian can show you step-by-step how to use a rectal thermometer in the office. You never want to place the thermometer into stool contained in the rectum, as this can give an inaccurate reading.

Dog Ear Temperature: You can also take your dog’s temperature via their ear. However you’ll need a specialized dog ear thermometer, and the reading is not as accurate as rectal temperature. Place the dog thermometer into your pet’s ear at a horizontal, 90-degree angle to their head. If your pet has an ear infection, you may want to try other methods to take their temperature, as using a thermometer on the infected ear may be painful.

A dog ear thermometer measures the infrared heat waves around the eardrum. This is more comfortable if performed properly, but your technique is essential. What makes an ear thermometer for dogs even better is the speed of the readings, which generally takes a few seconds. Consider talking to your veterinarian to have them show you the right method.

Infrared Dog Temperature: And finally, the least invasive method is infrared thermometers. These read temperatures from the skin, either from the inner ear or your pet’s armpits. While not as accurate as a rectal thermometer for dogs, they can give you a general idea of your pet’s temperature.

With all methods, be careful not to force the thermometers onto your pet. If it becomes difficult to measure their temperature or causes unnecessary stress to you or your dog, speak with your veterinarian before proceeding.

Dog Thermometers Buyer’s Guide

When shopping for a thermometer, consider how you will take your dog’s temperature. If you are comfortable using a rectal thermometer, choose one with that purpose in mind. “Because temperature is taken rectally in pets, I generally like thermometers that are tapered and less rigid. It also helps when the thermometer gives a quick reading,” says Dela Cruz.

If you’ll be taking your dog’s temperature through other methods, choose a good quality thermometer that allows for a more accurate reading. Some thermometers have a “silent” mode that keeps them from beeping, which is a good feature to look for if you have an easily startled dog.

For less invasive temperature taking, an infrared canine thermometer (like forehead readers you may already have at home) can be used, but the results may not be as accurate. Remember that these must be used on the skin of the inner ear or your dog’s armpit.

While signs often accompany a fever, the only way to know for sure whether your pet has a fever is by taking their temperature. Can you take a dog’s temp with a forehead thermometer? 

While you can’t take your dog’s temperature from their forehead, you may be able to use a forehead thermometer on your pet. Forehead thermometers often take temperature via infrared, which can be used on the skin of your dog’s inner ear and armpits. Remember that taking your dog’s temperature rectally is still the most accurate way to measure their temp, but this method may still provide a general idea of your pet’s temperature. This type of thermometer is most accurate when used on hairless areas of your pet, such as the belly, armpit, or ear.

Because a dog’s head is covered in fur, whether thick or sparse, you will not get an accurate reading on the forehead using a forehead thermometer.

Is there a special puppy thermometer I should use?

Although puppies do not require a specific puppy thermometer, pet parents should take extra precautions on a pup’s delicate rectal area. Most veterinarians use a dog rectal thermometer on puppies during checkups and examinations. Like adult dogs, the tip is lubricated and inserted gently about one inch into the rectum.

Of note, puppies tend to have a slightly higher baseline (normal) temperature compared to adult dogs. The normal range for puppies is 101.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit (38.6 to 39.2 degrees Celsius).

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help when taking your dog’s temperature. “Taking a temperature at home is generally a two-person job but can be accomplished by one if the person is particularly skilled at handling dogs or if the dog is very compliant,” says Dela Cruz.
• When taking a rectal temperature, a lubricant should be used every single time. And while it’s the most accurate way to tell your dog’s temperature, if any fecal matter is in the rectum, the temperature may read falsely low.
• Don’t force your dog to have their temperature taken. “If you can’t take temperature in a gentle fashion, then the information you would gain is not worth the traumatic experience for the pet,” says Dela Cruz.
• Most importantly, if you notice your pet is behaving differently and suspect a fever or illness, the best thing you can do for your dog is to bring them to the vet.

According to Dr. Nathalie Paiva, part of the emergency and critical care team at NorthStar VETS in New Jersey, “Chewing is a natural behavior for dogs. It serves many purposes, including checking out their environment, keeping their teeth clean, and enrichment (preventing boredom). Sometimes, dogs chew to help relieve pain or anxiety.”

A dog’s breed might also play a role. “I find that all high-energy breeds whose basic needs are not being met are more likely to need to chew, “ says Jeff Coltenback, a dog trainer and rescuer in North Carolina. “And working dogs [like Border Collies] that are stuck in a [standard] domestic environment without access to actual work will also be likely to need to chew. Of course, dogs are individuals and chewing may arise regardless of breed.”

Types of Dog Chews 

There are plenty of dog chew treats out there. You can keep things interesting for your pet by providing variety. Options include:

• Bully sticks. These chews come in various sizes. They’re made with one ingredient, which is beef, so they’re yummy and easy to digest. Plus, unlike other types of chews, they won’t splinter. Just be sure to supervise your pet so he doesn’t end up biting off too much, which might be a choking hazard.

• Dental chews for dogs. Dental chews may be softer and more flexible, so these could be a good option if other chews are too hard for your dog. They come in many shapes and sizes, and they’re designed to help clean your pet’s teeth.

• Horn and antler dog chews. Natural horn and antler dog chews are hard and available in a myriad shapes and sizes. Keep in mind that supervising your dog is necessary as these might splinter, which can result in your dog cutting his gums or breaking his teeth.

“As an emergency veterinarian, I have seen rawhide chews stuck everywhere from the roof of the mouth to the esophagus and the intestines,” says Dr. Paiva. “Many dogs have needed surgery to remove rawhide pieces from their stomach or intestines. Some dogs have died from choking on a piece of rawhide.”

Himalayan chews or yak chews are very hard and can damage a dog’s teeth. They are also prone to splintering, which can cause serious gastrointestinal obstructions. Himalayan dog chews are also made with cow’s milk, and most dogs are lactose intolerant and do not need dairy in their diets. For these reasons, most experts do not recommend these types of dog chews.

If you do want to give your dog rawhide or himalayan dog chews, discuss them with your veterinarian before giving them to your dog. Ask about precautions you can take and whether the chews are a good option for your pet.

A good quality chew can serve as a treat that keeps your dog busy, strengthens his jaw, and cleans his teeth.

Coltenback agrees, saying they can help satisfy your dog’s prey drive and alleviate boredom. “I think providing chews is essential for most dogs, whether they are adequately stimulated or not,” he says. “Chews do provide enrichment.”

Paiva also mentions that they can be helpful in keeping a chew-happy pup’s teeth away from your stuff, ensuring the safety of both your dog and your belongings. “Providing dogs with appropriate chews helps to prevent them from using your personal items as chews,” she explains. “Chewing on inappropriate items can be dangerous for your dog.” 

Things to Consider When Buying Dog Chews

There are a few things you want to look out for when purchasing dog chews.

Check the label. Read labels carefully, and choose products that contain safe ingredients and are a suitable size for your dog. Purchasing dog chews made by trustworthy manufacturers can give you peace of mind. Or, you can narrow your options by looking for vet-recommended dog chews.  

“Some dogs do not tolerate certain types of chews. If your dog has food allergies, you must be very careful when picking chews to make sure they are not allergic to the ingredients,” says Dr. Paiva. If your dog starts having vomiting, excessive gas and/or diarrhea, or is extra itchy immediately after or within a few days of trying a new chew, seek veterinary attention and avoid that chew in the future.

Ask questions. If you think your pet might benefit from chews with added ingredients, such as probiotic chews for dogs or CBD chews for dogs, it’s wise to consult with a veterinarian, as you want to be sure they’re safe for your canine companion.

Beware of breakability. “The most important thing I recommend looking for in a chew is that it cannot be easily broken into large pieces,” says Paiva. “Large pieces can get stuck in the mouth or gastrointestinal tract. It also should not be very hard since tooth fractures can occur from chewing.”

Vet recommended. Read labels, talk to your veterinarian, and try to purchase dog chewing treats that are the right size, ingredients, and are veterinarian recommended.

Dog Chew Safety Tips

As you know by now, there are some risks that come with chews for dogs. “Dog chews can get stuck in between teeth, break teeth, become stuck in the stomach and intestines requiring surgery, and can be a choking hazard,” explains Dr. Paiva.

It’s also necessary to keep an eye on your dog while he’s enjoying his chew, and to know when it’s time to replace it with a new one. “Dogs should be supervised when chewing. If their chews get small enough to be swallowed, they should be taken away,” she adds. “If you notice your dog can break off large pieces or you notice blood on the chew or in their mouth, it should be taken away.”

Coltenback shares this tip: “Offering a chew while you hold it is a good way to introduce a new chew to make sure the dog is actually gnawing (using the rear teeth) instead of trying to just swallow the chew whole.”

Another way to keep your dog safe is to take away chews when they become small enough for the dog to swallow.

Can I Give My Diabetic Cat Treats?

When your cat is first diagnosed with diabetes, your veterinarian will discuss what is called the regulation phase, or the period when your veterinarian is determining the best dose of insulin for your cat. “During the regulation phase, it is ideal to leave treats out [of the diet],” Dr. Reine-Salz says. “Once good regulation is established, and if your veterinarian believes it is appropriate, treats could be reintroduced.”

But there’s a caveat. Most cases of diabetes in cats resemble Type II diabetes. This means the cat can make insulin, but there’s something else going on that isn’t allowing insulin to work properly. Typically, this “something else” is obesity.

While certain types of treats or too many treats can lead to weight gain in cats, they’re not completely off the table (or permitted in the cat bowl). But Dr. Jo Myers, a veterinarian with Vetster encourages pet parents to explore calorie-free methods of showing their cat affection via play, brushing, or simply sitting next to their cat. “This applies to all cats, both with and without diabetes,” she says. 

Dr. Myers has a few exceptions to her limited-treat rule, and that’s during training exercises with your cat and when using puzzles for mental stimulation. Still, she says, if you choose to feed your diabetic cat treats and your veterinarian approves, treats shouldn’t make up more than 5 percent of your cat’s daily calorie needs.

According to Dr. Reine-Salz and Dr. Myers, the diet of a diabetic cat looks a lot like the biologically appropriate diet of any cat: high in protein, moderate in fat, and low in carbohydrates. Once you and your veterinarian decide on the most appropriate selection of diabetic-friendly food and treats for your cat, it’s important to stick to that diet. 

Ingredients aren’t the only consideration when choosing the right diet for your cat. Review the calorie density of treats and food and portion control based on your cat’s ideal weight, Dr. Myers says. “Nutritional therapy is critical for successful management of all types of Diabetes mellitus and can even lead to remission for Type II Diabetes mellitus.”

Timing of treats. When it comes to diabetes, timing of feeding and insulin administration is critical to successfully manage blood sugar. To give your cat the best chance of having controlled blood sugar, ask your vet for the best times of day to give your cat treats or use food puzzles.

Do you need a prescription? Needing a prescription for diabetic cat treats shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. In fact, you can feel good knowing your cat’s treats have been specially formulated for your cat’s unique needs. Hemp Oil vs. Hemp Seed Oil 

When you start shopping for hemp oil for your dog, you’ll notice there are two different phrases used on the label: hemp oil and hempseed (or hemp seed) oil. 

Both oils come from the hemp plant and are made from pressing the oil out of the plant matter, but different parts of the plant are used to create each oil. 

Hemp oil, also known as CBD oil (and sometimes called full spectrum hemp oil or broad spectrum hemp oil) is made from the stalks, leaves, and flowers of Cannabis sativa plants. It contains cannabidiol or CBD, which is the compound that has been shown to have health benefits for both pets and humans.

Hemp seed oil is derived from the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. Although the seeds were once believed to not to be a source of CBD, new research shows that, depending on the processing, hemp seed oil can contain up to 30 different cannabinoids. CBD levels are lower in hemp seed oil than in hemp oil. 

Both hemp oil and hemp seed oil also contain plant compounds such as terpenes and phenols that offer additional health benefits, according to Dr. Patrick Mahaney, a holistic veterinarian with California Pet Acupuncture and Wellness in Los Angeles.

“If a pet owner had a concern about CBD going into their pets and just wanted some of the benefits from the plant, I’d recommend hemp seed oil over hemp oil,” Mahaney says.

Benefits of Hemp Oil for Dogs

A growing number of studies have examined the potential benefits of hemp oil for dogs. Research has found that hemp oils with CBD helped to:

• Reduce epileptic seizures 
• Ease osteoarthritis pain 
• Improve mobility and quality of life
• Lower anxiety

To control chronic issues like seizures or osteoarthritis, Mahaney recommends using hemp oil once or twice per day. It can be offered as needed for acute anxiety-triggered by events such as fireworks, thunderstorms or appointments with the vet or groomer. You’ll need to plan ahead to make sure the CBD oil has time to kick in before the anxiety-producing event.

“It generally takes about an hour or so to have a therapeutic effect,” Mahaney adds. 

Is Hemp Oil Safe for Dogs?

Hemp oil is considered safe for dogs. Although some hemp oils contain CBD and small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the concentrations are extremely low. These are not psychoactive products and will not cause dogs to feel “high.” 

Check the label to ensure that hemp oil contains less than 0.3 percent THC. Mahaney notes that a dose this low is “improbable to show traditional signs of marijuana toxicity” such as whimpering, disorientation, and unsteadiness while standing. 

Some pet owners have reported side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, and lethargy after ingesting CBD oil. However most dogs do not experience side effects or require veterinary treatment. In studies that examined the effectiveness of hemp oil for osteoarthritis, no side effects were reported.

How to Use Hemp Oil for Dogs

Hemp oil is sold as an oil (called a tincture) and added to soft chews or other treats. These hemp oil products are available with and without CBD. 

Hemp oil in tincture form comes with a dropper that can be used to give a precise dose to pets. You can use the dropper to put the oil under their tongue or against their cheek, which is considered the gold standard for accurate, effective dosing. If your dog is uncomfortable taking the hemp oil in this manner, it can be drizzled on a treat or your dog’s food. 

You can also purchase soft chews or capsules containing hemp oil. The flavoring in the treats help mask the taste of the hemp oil. Hemp oil treats for dogs are also easier to give on-the-go than a dropper full of hemp oil. However, these non-liquid products are not absorbed in the same way as traditional hemp oils.

“[Hemp oil] is better absorbed through the mouth and gums,” Mahaney says. “If you give your pet hemp oil chews or a capsule or put a tincture on their food, it’s going to be primarily absorbed through the small intestines. Those products still work but the absorption might not be as good as we would like and it might take longer to take effect.”

In general, treats also contain lower amounts of active ingredients like CBD than hemp oil tinctures.
