DeVoss explained that when most cats eat catnip, it helps them feel calm and can reduce anxiety. It has the opposite effect when they smell it and acts more like a stimulant. Catnip can be a great way to enrich your cat’s environment.

“Pet parents like to give their cats catnip because it creates excitement and happiness for their cat,” said DeVoss. “But it’s also fun for humans to watch their cat roll, flip, flop, and zone out — and it makes great social media content!” DeVoss also mentions that if your cat doesn’t respond to catnip, they’ll miss out on the effects of this herb, but you’ll also miss out on the chance to watch your cat having fun.

Even though cleaning your cat’s litter box isn’t the most fun part of pet ownership, paying attention to your cat’s toileting habits can help identify potential health issues that may need veterinary intervention.

Changes in your cat’s litter box habits or output can point to issues ranging from minor gastrointestinal upset to serious urinary tract infection.

But how can pet parents interpret what their cat’s litter box is telling them? However, knowing your cat’s regular poop and pee schedule plays a key role in helping you detect changes that could indicate a health problem. 

“Significant deviations, such as increased frequency, decreased output, straining, or noticeable changes in stool consistency, can be signs of health problems,” explains Kong.

8 Things Your Cat’s Litter Box Can Reveal About Their Health

From cat health problems like urinary tract infections to aversions to certain types of cat litter, here are potential issues to watch for.

Cat Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

“Infections in the urinary system can cause discomfort during urination, leading to aversion to the litter box,” says Dr. Colleen Lambo, DVM, a veterinarian with mobile veterinary services provider The Vets. You may notice your cat straining to urinate inside or outside their box. It might also seem like they’re urinating a lot more, but if you check their box, the litter is often still dry.

“Color-changing litters may assist in early identification of urinary issues by detecting changes in pH,” says Dr. Lambo. So, if your cat is prone to UTIs, or you want to detect any changes to their urine as quickly as possible, using a color-changing kitty litter might be a good idea.  One such litter is Fresh Step Crystals Health Monitoring Litter.”

According to Dr. Lambo, “Problems such as constipation, diarrhea, or inflammatory bowel disease can affect a cat’s litter box habits.”

“Watch out for small, hard stools that can indicate dehydration or constipation,” says Dr. Kong. “Loose or watery stools can indicate gastrointestinal upset,” she adds. Take note of any unusual smells explained by a change in your cat’s diet. If your cat is constipated, they may associate this discomfort with their litter box and avoid using it.

If these problems persist for more than 48 hours, or you’re concerned about your cat’s health, it’s best to ask your veterinarian for advice.

Stress and Anxiety

“Cats may avoid the litter box due to stress, changes in the household, or conflicts with other pets,” says Dr. Lambo.

Ensure your cat’s litter box is in a suitable part of your house. Dr. Lambo recommends “ensuring it is in a quiet, easily accessible location, away from the cat’s food and water bowls.”

Again, if you have multiple cats, make sure there are always enough litter boxes for each cat, plus one spare. A dirty litter box can also stress cats out — and they may look for somewhere else to do their business rather than use an unclean box.

Dehydration

If your cat seems to be urinating less than usual or their urine is very dark, this can be a sign of dehydration. It’s hard to monitor a cat’s water intake—but they tend to drink around ¾ to 1 cup daily.

According to the Cornell Feline Health Center, one way to check for dehydration is to gently pull the skin on your cat’s shoulders upwards. If it doesn’t fall back down immediately, they may be dehydrated. Another way to check is to look at your cat’s gums—they should be pink and moist rather than pale and dry. 

Litter Type Aversion

Placing your cat’s litter box in the right location is crucial—but so is the type of litter you use. “Some cats prefer certain textures, and experimenting with different types may help find what the cat likes,” notes Dr. Lambo.

If you want to transition your cat to a different kind of litter, like crystal cat litter, do so over a week, adding a small amount of the new litter and then gradually increasing the quantity while decreasing the amount of old cat litter.

Health Issues

Several health issues, including kidney disease and diabetes, can cause changes to your cat’s litter box habits.

“Cats with kidney disease may experience increased thirst and urination, leading to frequent use of the litter box,” says Dr. Bethany Hsia, DVM, co-founder of CodaPet. “Kidney disease can cause changes in urine concentration and odor, which may result in inappropriate elimination.” .

“Diabetes can lead to increased urination and thirst in cats. As a result, diabetic cats may have accidents outside the litter box or require more frequent litter box visits,” she adds.

Mobility Issues

“Arthritis or other mobility issues may make it difficult for cats to access the litter box comfortably,” says Dr. Lambo. This can be more of an issue with some types of litter boxes that are harder to access, for example, self-cleaning boxes with a high step or covered boxes.

In this case, a clue can be a cat pooping outside the litter box or a cat peeing outside the litter box but close to it. This indicates they’re trying to access their box but are having trouble.

Dr. Hsia advises monitoring any “changes in urine color, changes in urine frequency, changes or stool consistency or if your cat appears to be straining when urinating or defecating.”

If these changes appear minor, and your cat doesn’t show any other concerning symptoms, you might decide to monitor the situation closely.

“However, it is important to keep a watchful eye on the cat’s behavior and litter box habits while being prepared to seek veterinary advice if the situation does not improve or if additional symptoms develop,” explains Dr. Hsia.

Dog perfumes differ from deodorizers, which contain ingredients like baking soda designed to neutralize, rather than mask, doggy odors. Some deodorizers also contain a subtle fragrance as well. 

Perfumes might only be suitable for some dogs, and if you plan to use one on your puppy, check that it is for younger dogs. The shape of a dog’s ear canal makes them more prone to developing infections than their human counterparts. While our ear canal is relatively straight, a dog’s is shaped like an L. This creates an area where fluid can collect — creating the perfect environment for bacteria, yeast, or fungus to thrive. 

Dog ear infections tend to fall into three categories:

• Otitis externa: Affects the external ear canal
• Otitis media: Occurs within the middle ear
• Otitis interna: Occurs within the inner ear 

The most common type of ear infection in dogs is otitis externa, which is usually easily treated. But if left untreated, it can develop into otitis media or otitis interna. Middle and inner ear infections tend to be a lot more serious and painful, requiring more extensive treatment.

6 Signs of Ear Infection in Dogs

So, what are some warning signs of ear infections in dogs? Sometimes, changes in your dog’s behavior will be easy to pick up on, and other times you might not notice anything is wrong with your pet. Here are six common signs of ear infections in dogs to watch for:

1. Head shaking 

If your dog has long ears, you might have come to love the distinctive sound of their floppy ear shake — but excessive head-shaking can be a sign of an ear infection. If your dog can’t stop shaking their head, give their ears a closer look. 

2. Scratching and rubbing 

Ear infections can make a dog’s ears very itchy. In an attempt to soothe this, your dog might scratch their ears with a paw or rub their heads along the wall or floor. You might also hear your dog crying or whimpering as they rub their ears.  

3. Inflammation or swelling

A dog’s ears may become inflamed, swollen, and hot to the touch. In extreme cases, your dog may get a hematoma (a blood collection under the skin), which will result in extreme swelling. 

4. Excessive ear wax

One thing to bear in mind with laser toys is that they can cause frustration or even eye damage if used incorrectly, says Dr. Downes. “Decrease frustration by interspersing some playtime with a 3D toy and take care not to shine the laser into your cat’s eye,” she says. “A safer — and inexpensive — alternative to laser toys is a regular flashlight with a small, focused beam or a penlight.”

Use them to combat loneliness and boredom. Interactive toys can be a great way to provide your cat with something to do while you’re out of the house. “Pet parents do not always need to be there for their cats to benefit from remote control toys,” says Dr. Downes. Motion activated toys will keep your cat occupied, while remote control laser cat toys with an integrated camera are a great way for you to check in on your cat. 

Keep toys age appropriate. Remote control toys are suitable for all ages of cat, but if you have a kitten Dr. Downes says to remember that they “tend to prefer interactive toys they can actually pounce on and bite.” So choose a durable toy decided for slightly rougher play, and regularly check it for any signs of wear and tear.  

Limit play sessions. Your cat will usually let you know when they’ve had enough playing, and if they need a break they’ll likely walk away. Some toys have timers on them, so play sessions are limited to a set amount of time and you don’t need to worry about your cat over-exerting themselves. Always make sure plenty of fresh water is available so they can rehydrate after all that exercise!

According to dog trainer Steffi Trott, founder of SpiritDog Training, whether or not your dog needs a winter coat largely depends on three factors: 

• their ability to stay warm (which is often influenced by their breed, age, coat, etc.)
• the temperature, precipitation, and wind chill where you live
• their activity level

“Some breeds are born to feel comfortable in the cold,” Trott says. “Dogs like huskies, Great Pyrenees, or Saint Bernards have a thick double coat that keeps them cozy, even in very low temperatures.” 

“If your dog is a healthy adult of a northern breed or a livestock guarding dog, chances are they will not need a winter coat,” she advises.

“On the other hand, there are many breeds with a single coat or a medium-to-thin double coat. For these, a winter coat might become necessary. This is especially the case for puppies under six months old or senior dogs. Their ability to regulate their body temperature can be limited, and they get cold faster,” warns Trott. 

“Also, if your dog has a single coat or a thin double coat, they might get cold very quickly if it is raining or snowing,” she says. “In this case, they should absolutely wear a waterproof coat.” 

It’s also important to think about the kinds of activities your dog might undertake while wearing a coat. “Remember that a dog who is actively moving is less likely to become cold than a dog who’s standing still or even lying down in the cold,” Trott says.

”For example, a high-energy breed with thin fur like a Doberman might be completely fine on a brisk 30-minute walk through the snow without a winter coat. On the other hand, if the same dog were to be left out in the yard, standing around in the snow, they would get very cold very quickly!” says Trott.
